Made homeless in the middle of winter, Christina and Lorraine want to buy a bus to ensure stability, security and a place to call home.
Christchurch, Canterbury
Christina and Lorraine were kicked out of the house they were renting, leaving them with nowhere to go. Forced onto the streets in the middle of winter, they sought the support of their local church. Through this, they were lent a van to stay in while they looked at long term options. They are currently staying on-site at Holy Trinity Avonside, who have offered the use of their carpark and access to church facilities while they're open during the day.
"Ever since we've been here, the Holy Trinity Church has helped us with things that we need; like clothes, blankets, food, and if we need anything else they're willing to help us. They've become like a family to us." -Christina
However, with uncertainty over long-term use of the land, Christina and Lorraine are trying to plan for the future. Despite the generosity of the church, there is no access to power on-site and the carpark is prone to flooding. Currently, the couple are renting a bus, but this is the third vehicle they have used since becoming homeless and the knowledge their stability is based on external factors weighs heavily on them.
Their goal is to buy this bus.
When asked what owning the bus would mean to them, Christina said, "it would mean a lot to us, it would mean the world to us. We could travel around where we want to when we want to."
It would mean stability, security, safety and the knowledge that 'home' isn't something that can be taken away again.
The money will be used to purchase the bus Christina and Lorraine are currently renting. If the target isn't met, it will go towards a down payment on the bus, or another bus or camper van.
