Help us continue to celebrate the Tokelau language on air.
Wellington
We are a small group running a twice weekly radio program for the Wellington Tokelau community on 106.1FM Wellington Access Radio. Our program consists of health information, education for our people and is a hub for community notices and news. In the modern era, where Tokelau migrants struggle to stay informed, we provide updates for our community, and are a forum to spark discussion. As a group, our priority is to maintain and boost our Tokelauan language. Tokelauan is one of New Zealands dying languages.
In our humble beginnings, we had 30 minutes on air a week. Through hard work and consistency, we slowly built up to 1 hour a week, then to 2. And now we have 5 hours spread over 2 days a week. 5 hours of airtime dedicated to our community, which is a feat within itself. We started off with 3 people running the show. We now have 12 members who volunteer their time for the betterment of our community.
Our program has been on air since 1990, almost 30 years. All this time, we have received funding from various contracts through government departments and out of the community's generosity. Sadly, we have lost some of our major sponsors, and are in danger of having to shut down. Losing our program means losing a valuable asset to our community. The absence of our language on air would be detrimental to our language as a whole. This would be a tragic loss for our future generations especially.
This is where we need YOU.
We are reaching out to you, to ask for a helping hand in our time of need. We are looking to generate some funding through givealittle.co.nz to help us stay afloat. This is not all the funding we need, but it would be a healthy start. We are also looking at other revenues of fundraising, more centered within our community, but every cent helps! So please, if you have anything to spare we would be most grateful.
E kukutia te tiuga lakia, e kukulima kae ala tahi.
United in a common purpose, the revival of our language.
To guarantee a future for our Tokelau radio program.
