Stop commercial housing development of Puketiti, Opua.
Northland
S.O.S is a local group of Opua residents who are concerned that public land, the Puketiti Headland @ Kellet St in Opua, has been sold to an overseas buyer for commercial development. We feel that the community wasn't properly consulted and are seeking legal advice to try to stop this.
Since learning of the sale, S.O.S have written to the Overseas Investment Office, the Auditor-General and the Ombudsman to request assistance, but without any success. Members of the Group have paid for two legal opinions out of their own pockets to the tune of around $12,000 to ascertain the community’s ability to challenge the sale and provide a way forward in securing access and ownership of this important public area for the residents of Opua.
As well as the land still being under Treaty Claim, great concern has been expressed over the impact that the development and increase in traffic movement would have on Opua School. Incredibly, it was suggested that the school should cap its intake to reduce the issue of congestion.
So please help us out with a few dollars to continue our efforts to halt this before it's too late!!
Assisting with online petition, community awareness and any other help with community group where possible.
Assist with already incurred legal fees of around $12,000 - any surplus will go to Opua Community projects.
