Just weeks ago, Victoria McHardy was an active, healthy 36-year-old mother living in Mangatāwhiri with her husband, Cory and their young, children, Emily 12, Maia 10 and Ryan 8. In a matter of days, a standard bout of Influenza A took a catastrophic turn. Victoria developed severe pneumonia, which rapidly spiraled into septic shock. As her organs began to fail, doctors at Middlemore Hospital fought around the clock to save her life. She was placed in an induced coma on full life support. While the medical team successfully saved her life, the intense medication required to keep her vital organs functioning cut off blood circulation to her extremities. Tragically, this resulted in severe tissue damage, and doctors had no choice but to perform an above-the-knee amputation of her left leg.
