The Kakudjis need our help

Emmanuel and Carole in DR Congo need a hand in dealing with two deaths, medical expenses, the adoption of their niece and school fees.

Waikato

In 2007 and 2010 I visited the Kakudji family in Lubumbashi, DR Congo. They are great people doing what they can to help marginalised groups like the deaf and street kids in their community.

Tragedy has now struck hard and close;

On Saturday April 4th, Regine died in Carole’s arms while giving birth to her 5th child following a caesarean section that went horribly wrong. Unable to cope with a new baby as well as his four children aged 14, 9, 6 and 3, husband Jeff asked Emmanuel (his brother) and Carole to raise his baby daughter as their own. With five children of their own plus two adopted street kids, (the youngest is 10), as well as Emmanuel’s older brother, a polio victim, who lives with them, this middle aged couple have risen to the challenge.

On the same day that Regine died, Emmanuel’s good friend Dieudonne and wife Nadine awaited the arrival of their first child after nine years of marriage but unfortunately their child was stillborn.

Emmanuel and Carole are doing what they can to help the two grieving families. However, on top of the emotional support there are the costs of two caesareans, a funeral and ongoing medical expenses for Nadine who is still hospitalised. At the same time they are helping Jeff who is very distraught and cannot work as he is looking after his four children.

Emmanuel and Carole are adjusting to a new baby in their household. They have had to buy clothes, a cot, milk formula etc and have regular doctor’s visits to make sure the baby is doing alright on formula. As you will appreciate, it is very tough on them. Even before these tragedies struck, some of their own children had not been to school this year as they cannot afford the fees following two armed robberies.

Are you able to help my friends Emmanuel and Carole? They are wanting to do the right thing and give this child a chance and help out their family and friends during this very difficult time.

Every gift given will be a huge encouragement and help to them regardless of the amount.

Thanks,

Murray

In the 1990’s we spent 6 years living in Africa and I get the opportunity to return to Africa every couple of years. We have met many wonderful folk doing great things on shoestring budgets in order to help individuals, families and communities.

The Kakudji family are a case in point – Emmanuel has learnt sign language so as to help the deaf who have no governmental funding available to them. He has visited prisons to take in food and clothing and he and Carole have adopted two street kids.

The Kakudji’s require a leg-up, a bit of help and encouragement to get them through this difficult time.

I recommend them to you without hesitation.

Thanks,

Murray

“Fortunately the Shock is in my Head and not my Heart...”  4 May 2015

This is an expression of sadness passed by my younger brother Jeff who lost his wife Régine a month ago. This is him with his children.

In fact, this young man needs a high level of support in order to be comforted and strong.

Unfortunately we have nothing to offer him in Lubumbashi. There are no psychiatric services available or services that specialise in helping people affected by trauma like the loss of a loved one.

Régines death has been very hard for Jeff. He is in shock, suffers depression, anxiety, lack of appetite and weight loss.

For the first time since Régine’s death, Jeff came to the house to see how baby Hadassah Kakudji was doing. It did not go well, seeing Hadassah only served to bring back memories of Régine and that fateful day that saw her taken from him. After a few short minutes Jeff fell unconscious in the living room. Carole, my wife, who was with him helped him to revive him with some pills to calm tension and headaches.

As I was trying to see get help, Jeff said, 'Dear big brother, fortunately the shock is limited to my head because if it reached my heart, I would be dead! When I think my wife and I look at the suffering of my children, I have no appetite or even desire to live. ''

Friends, can you please tell me how I can help Jeff through difficult time so that he can move on with his life.

Unfortunately, it isn’t only his mental state that is suffering as today I discovered that his financial situation is dire.

Thank you in advance for your support that will help relieve his suffering.

Emmanuel Ngoy Kakudji.
