Otago
The Otago down syndrome assn is a not for profit group run by parents of people with down syndrome. We rely totally on fundraising and donations. Our mission is to promote the participation of people with down syndrome in there community and to support their parents and carers. We are in the process of building a library of educational tools and books that parents, carers and people with down syndrome can access and use. Our committee and members have a wealth of information and knowledge to share with parents, carers, teachers and people with down syndrome.
The reason for this fundraising is we are wanting to take our members and their caregivers on the Taieri Gorge train. We have 50 people(25 members and 25 caregivers maybe more)going on this trip. At a average cost of $50pp we hope to raise $2500 to cover the fair for the train. If we were to raise more we would use that money to buy more literature for our library or numicon maths kits that the parents can borrow for teaching there children maths.
My name is Glen Jelley and I am the president of the Otago down syndrome assn,I have a 7 year old daughter with down syndrome. I have entered myself in a half marathon to try to raise money to take our members and carers on the taieri gorge train to middlemarch from dunedin for a special outing at Christmas. Our hope is to raise enough money to cover the bulk of the cost of the trip.Alot of our members and carers cannot afford the extra expense due to extra expenses that come with having children with down syndrome. (Doctors, speech, occupational and physical therapy and special food for some)
