Two weeks ago Ben had surgery while in Hutt Hospital which was the skin graft to close up where the surgeons had made an incision to release the swelling. The skin was taken from Ben’s other leg. The surgeons said the skin graft surgery went well and that it is now a waiting game to see if the skin will attach successfully.

After checking the progress of the graft the surgeons were happy enough with it that Ben was able to get up and sit in a chair. This was the first time in 23 days Ben had been able to be out of bed! This was a great milestone for Ben.

Since then on Monday Ben was able to return home to Nelson Hospital by air ambulance. The Nelson doctors took x-rays to see the extent of the damage caused and repairs already made by Wellington’s surgeons so they could assess Bens next step in his recovery. Ben still can’t feel anything from the knee down or use his leg and the surgeons have advised that it could be 6-12 months before he can.

Along with further minor surgeries Ben also has appointments such as physio for his rehabilitation and meetings with a dietician to get him to start eating again. He will remain at Nelson Hospital for the time being.

This week Ben was able to venture out from the hospital in a wheelchair to enjoy some fresh air and sun with Megan & they are both looking forward to their baby scan next Monday which Ben can now go to.

Ben and Megan are extremely happy to be back in Nelson and would like to thank everyone who has donated so far.

  • End off Week 1 Updaye

      21 January 2020

Ben and Megan would like to thank everyone who has donated so far and also those who have sent messages checking on them and asking after Ben. They have been blown away by all of your support over the course of the last week.

It has been a full on week of waiting through multiple lengthy surgeries for Megan and Ben’s parents, Johnny and Elaine.

On a seriously positive note Ben is awake again as of Friday 17th and has been in good spirits even though he is pretty lethargic due to his medication

Today Ben was moved to Hutt Hospital

He has been moved here for a few reasons. Firstly he is in a less critical condition now and secondly it is here he will undergo further procedures to repair his leg

The bullet wound is at the top of his femur (thigh bone) and he also has 2 other wounds. One on his quad area and the other on his calf. The surgeons had to make these cuts to release the swelling that happened in his leg after the accident. As well as this the sciatic nerve was split in two by the bullet.

The next major surgery will be to close those wounds created by the surgeons and also to close where the bullet came out. As well as this they will attempt to the fix the sciatic nerve. The extent of his injuries will still not be entirely clear for some time in regards to the use of his leg

We will try and post updates each week so friends and family can keep up to date with how Ben’s recovery is going. It is still a bit unknown when Ben will be able to return to Nelson and Megan, Johnny and Elaine will be remaining in Wellington to support Ben for the for as long as they can before he is given the ok to return. Please keep sharing this page so we can help raise more money to help support Ben, Megan and family in the coming months.

Thank you again for all your donations!

    Lou and Guy
