I can't really express how much all of the donations meant. They allowed me to meet our needs after we arrived in Christchurch from Wellington quite suddenly. We were also given comfort in the dark moments.

George is doing well now and is on a break from chemotherapy. He's huge and has a full head of hair. He's talking trying high school. He's also had his official ADHD and Autism disgnoses. :)

There were some mistakes made by the hospital in our transition home. This meant that there has been stress around getting my son to chemo, advocating for us at the hospital, etc. I am chronically ill and experienced a severe increase in pain while we were away. With the lack of support with practical tasks (despite the will of those around me, trying, but with disabilities of their own), I worked myself into burnout. My pain has been severe for some time.

This meant that I had to rely on the support of the beautiful people who were there for us in the really dark moments for too long. They've all left in a spectacular fashion.

I'm feeling really alone. Anyway, now I've broken my ankle, can't get pain relief, had to give up on the ED a second time as my doctor wanted me in a cast. Anyway, hurts, can someone please donate again so I can get an Uber and pay for after hours medical? 😭

Georgie has also been really keen on getting stronger again and as part of that, wants to go for scooter rides with hia doggo. He told me I should ask the Givealittle people for a scooter? 😆

  • Adjusting to being back home.

      27 October 2025

    Kia Ora all,

George and his mum were trasnferred back home to Wellington 2 weeks ago. George has spent lots of time doing lots of things he used to do. Little things like walking to his local dairy to buy some lollies, getting out of the house and doing familiar activities from before Cancer became a big part of their lives. In the last 2 weeks he has not recieved any Chemo- it has been a nice break and has given George and his Mum some much needed time for settling back home. Today George is back to having daily chemotherapy treatment here in Wellington. He is doing extremely well and is growing like a bean stalk!

A huge thank you for all your continuous support.

  • Another Update….. ❤️‍🩹

On Monday the 22nd, George underwent a bone marrow aspiration to check how his body is responding to chemotherapy and to help determine the next steps in his treatment journey.

It was an emotional week, with George continuing daily chemotherapy while waiting for results. When they came through on Friday, we learnt that although his leukaemia cells had reduced dramatically and he’s responding incredibly well, they hadn’t dropped quite enough to move on to the next stage just yet.

It was tough news to take in, but we remain hopeful and so grateful for how well George’s body has coped with treatment so far.

Since then, George has completed another two weeks of daily chemo and had another bone marrow aspiration today. We’re keeping everything crossed for positive results — and for the day George and his mum can return home to Wellington to continue treatment surrounded by familiar faces and comforts.

In between treatments, George has been spending time on his new gaming laptop — watching YouTube, playing games, and finding ways to stay entertained. He and Sonya have also managed a few post-chemo adventures around Christchurch when he’s feeling well.

We want to say a heartfelt thank you for the ongoing love and support. It has truly made a world of difference. Financially, things are tough right now, and the Givealittle support has meant Sonya can focus fully on caring for George. Any continued donations are deeply appreciated and help ease the load during this challenging time.

  • Amazing news and another massive thank you!

It’s been a full-on few weeks since the last update. George was moved from ICU to the children’s oncology ward once he was stable enough to continue treatment there. That step came with its challenges, but also some really encouraging signs of progress.

The best news is that George has responded so well to treatment that he and his mum have been able to leave the hospital and move into Ronald McDonald House. The team there has been incredible—giving them space to breathe and a sense of normal life in the middle of everything.

Being out of hospital has made a world of difference for both George and Sonya. They’re deeply grateful for the kindness shown through Givealittle and in so many other ways. The donations have already lifted a real weight off Sonya’s shoulders. On the tougher hospital days, George would often scroll through the page and read the messages—those words reminded him, and Sonya, that they weren’t in this fight alone.

For me, it’s been a privilege to walk alongside them, to help where I can and to make sure their needs are heard.

They’ll be at Ronald McDonald House for a few more weeks yet, and if things continue moving in the right direction, the hope is that they’ll soon get the all-clear to return home to Wellington to continue treatment—a shift that will make daily life a little easier, though it will still bring its own set of challenges.

From the bottom of our hearts, Thank you 🧡❤️‍🩹

  • Update and Thank you!

      28 August 2025

    Kia Ora all,

I just wanted to say a massive thank you for all of the support everyone has shown George and Sonya ( his mum) this far!

The lovely messages and the generous donations have not gone unnoticed. George and Sonya are so appreciative and overwhelmed with the love and support shown to them.

George has started chemotherapy down in Christchurch. So far it’s looking like the leukaemia is responding well to the chemo, but as to be expected he is having all the side effects and doing lots of sleeping. He is currently in a medical ward and having the children’s oncology coming down to him for chemo treatment as his body isn’t quite strong enough medically yet just to be on the oncology ward.

There are still so many unknowns, but they are slowly adjusting to what their life is going to be like for the next wee while.

George and Sonya are frequently checking the givealittle page and I know this has been a massive help lifting his spirit up through this difficult time.

Once again, a MASSIVE thank you!

    Ruth
