Supporting Rose and Liz Worley at their Te Henga home after flooding and sandslide.
Te Henga (Bethells Beach), Auckland
Bethells Beach sisters Rose, Liz, 6 year old Jonah and their cat Smooch were forced from their home at 1.30am as flood waters were rapidly rising. These flood waters ended up being waist high and pounded the property with strong currents.
Evacuating in the middle of the night to the house next door which is more elevated, but then waking to find flood waters surrounding them they had to be rescued by lifeguards. Everyone is thankfully unharmed.
Miraculously the house was only 1/4 flooded, all other buildings, bedroom/sleepout, garage and tool shed are flood damaged along with all of the plumbing. What has caused the biggest destruction is the thousands and thousands of tons of sand from the Lake Wainamu sand dunes that has engulfed their entire property. Covering everything in its path, it is unrecognisable.
They are now faced with digging themselves out of the sand and trying to make their home safe to live in, with bigger decisions to be made at a later date, this will all come at a huge cost.
They are also dealing with no power and water alongside the rest of the Bethells Beach community which is making everything that much more difficult to navigate their way through the next steps.
The community have been incredible with digging and other support but many have asked to donate to help them out with this mammoth task ahead.
There are a lot of people in need who have been greatly affected by Gabrielle, so please only donate if you can. Sincerest thanks!!
Unfortunately they do not have insurance.

A week on... 21 February 2023
A message from Rose and Liz:
It is a week today since we evacuated from our home.
We have been humbled by the love and support people have shown us.
The donations, the food, the digging, the kind messages, more digging, the accommodation and the hugs.
Much work has been done by friends, family and the wider community to help us remove the half a meter of sand that was dumped on us from around and inside of buildings so that we can hopefully soon have our house back to a livable standard. This will hopefully buy us some time to have a think about what our future looks like. There’s a lot of work still to be done and it’s all pretty overwhelming for us but we wanted you to know that we really appreciate your support.
Much love, Liz, Rose, Jonah, Smooch and the chickens
