I want to create a documentary about the growing plight of homelessness in Aotearoa, NZ and how it is effecting whole families.
Auckland
According to statistics 40,000 people are now homeless in Aotearoa, NZ. 40,000! This is immoral, evil and wrong. This national tragedy is primarily due to the extreme right wing policies of the National Party who continue to sell our state houses off to multinational investors. Whole families, including tamariki (children), kaumatua and kuia (elderly people) are living in cars, while politicians such as John Key and Bill English, live in ostentatious wealth. This is utterly unacceptable in such an incredibly affluent and prosperous country as ours. So my vision is to create a documentary which focuses on what I define as the hidden faces of homelessness such as parents who work full time minimum wage jobs, but because of the immoral rent prices, cannot afford to rent a place, but are forced to either live in deplorable conditions such as rat infested garages covered in mould, or in their cars etc. I want to also show how the political decisions of the National Party, driven by greed and self-interest, has led to this travesty of justice. I want those who are homeless to have a voice so their stories are told and the truth of this hidden epidemic is revealed and those who have caused it exposed.
I am the writer, producer, director and editor of this documentary.
I will be using the funding to make the documentary as it is being entirely self-funded. Finances will go toward accommodation, travel, administration, equipment hire etc.
