The Barrington Family Need Your Help

    (With permission)

Little Anastasia Vivian Barrington arrived on the 28th of December, weighing 3230g... and she’s a darling! You can see in the pics below 😍

Jo had quite a tough labour after being induced (via multiple avenues) but she’s happy (exhausted but happy) to have Anastasia here healthy!

As nothing can run smoothly in the Barrington household, I was unable to see them after returning from holiday as they were in hospital with Genevieve...(she has subsequently been disacharged from hospital and readmitted again today).

I did manage to pop around for a visit last weekend and found two exhausted parents, one sleeping child (tucked away in her room), and one beautiful sleeping baby. When John and Jo told me that she screams most of the night, I struggled to believe them. She was an angel my entire visit!!

Unfortunately, baby Anastasia is also struggling to thrive and was admitted to hospital a few days ago. (Which means that the whole family is currently at Base Hospital - but in different wards). They are having feeding issues and Anastasia is struggling to regain the weight babies lose after birth and has continued to lose weight. Jo assures me that they are getting the help and advice they need in hospital. Phew! So hopefully Anastasia will turn the corner soon.

As Jo pointed out, it’s really first time parenting for them all over again. As Genevieve was in hospital for so long at the beginning of her life, they never experienced having a newborn at home. Quite a daunting and exhausting experience... especially when you add Genevieve’s care on top of that... you’ll appreciate that neither of these parents have had a full nights sleep in over 4.5 years.

In good, really good, news, without counting our chickens before they hatch... a donor is looking promising for Genevieve. They did cross match blood tests yesterday and we’re all holding fingers!! Please hold yours too!!

(With the help of the donor pool, it means that John will donate a kidney to another recipient, in the event that one becomes available for Genevieve. What I didn’t realise is that both of these operations occur within a very short time frame of each other, to essentially prevent someone (in this case John) from pulling out. While I understand that, it means that Jo will be managing two recovering family members and a newborn! Wow! So for this reason they have decided to use the money raised from this page to fly Jo’s mum Priscilla, out from South Africa when the time arises).

This page has 2.5weeks left to run, let’s see what we can do.

A happy new year to you all!

    Sam

    Hi All,

John, Jo and Genevieve are all back home together and settling back into their daily routine. After doing some blood tests they popped in to see us (as we live around the corner from Medlab) and Genevieve seemed back to her old self; complete with drawing on the floor (only white board marker don’t worry!).

From my limited understanding (don’t quote me on this), it appeared that Genevieve’s recent growth spurt mucked up her Ammonia levels and they were unable to stabilise this in Taranaki. Things seemed to improve at Starship but then all of a sudden Genevieve started experiencing fits and vomiting. Naturally, this was incredibly frightening to Jo. That’s when John went up to be with the family. Luckily, the doctors were on to it and Genevieve got better which is why they were allowed to come home although she will continue to be closely monitored.

Jo is now 29 weeks pregnant and looking every bit the beautiful glowing pregnant mum. Baby is kicking Jo right in her scar, but otherwise behaving perfectly. Good baby.

John has finally managed to get his car going (after a few weeks of being abandoned on the side of the road - lucky this wasn’t in SA) and has driven it home.

There have been a few amazing individuals coming through to be kidney donors for Genevieve, thank you so much for expressing interest.

It’s great for the family to be home and together, thank you all for your amazing generosity, thoughts and prayers. It all helps.

Have a great rest of your weekend.

    Sam x

    Hi All xx

I spoke with Jo this morning and so far the news looks promising. The doctors think that Genevieve has been deprived of protein which may have been exacerbated by her recent growth spurt. They are adjusting her diet accordingly and hoping for the best. (According to Jo, this is the nature of metabolic disorders, they change so frequently and they're so complex that the specialists at Starship need to be the ones to make these calls. Remember that Genevieve is one of only a handful of kids with this condition and in her own subgroup too. The doctors at Starship are truly amazing!).

Genevieve had an ECHO done yesterday and the drugs made her so tired that she slept through the night - Jo enjoyed the much needed rest. Jo is healing well, her wounds are getting better by the day and baby is kicking and doing all the things a baby should.

Thank you all again for your very kind donations, thoughts and prayers.

    Xx Sam

  • Back to Hospital

Jo is back in Hospital with Genevieve. Due to her failing kidneys, Genevieve's blood work is in a bad way and she requires IV fluids. Poor thing only got out of hospital two weeks ago!

Jo says that Genevieve is a trooper.

We're thinking of you all so much.

Thanks again for all of your support and for those interested in organ donation xxx

    Love Sam

  • A letter from Mum Jo

      2 October 2017

We are truely humbled by the generosity of friends and strangers alike. There are many families in our position, but it is refreshing to know that there is still such kindness and hope blessing our family. To all who have donated, and to the many friends and neighbours who have provided us with meals and baking to keep us going...a very big thank-you!

Once Genevieve's transplant is scheduled, these funds raised will be put towards either a plane ticket to bring my Mom out from South Africa to help us, or to support our several month stay at Starship/Ronald McDonald House...as you know an extended stay away from home is very draining on the finances. So thank-you all again for easing this burden.

As a result of the article there has been interest expressed by some wishing to be organ donors for Genevieve. We are truly grateful for this.

On a personal note: To my husband John, my best friend and my Rock. I love you so very much and I could not have done this without you.

To Genevieve, you are the strongest kid I know, and you are always smiling and finding joy in the simplest things...we love you so very much!

And to my little girl that I have yet to meet, we can't wait to welcome you into this crazy family...and just remember, when you have a sister, you have a friend for life!

    Thank-you,

    Jo Barrington
