Houghton Valley Community Hall needs an urgent roof repair after damage by thieves.
Houghton Bay, Wellington
Our lovely old community-owned hall in Houghton Valley has had a major setback. Thieves stole the copper spouting on the flat roof extension and tore the edge of the malthoid roofing membrane. Fragments were scattered around the grounds and the Playcentre next door. They were tested and there was asbestos embedded in the bitumen.
The Houghton Valley Progressive Association, who looks after the hall, had funds set aside for re-roofing this part of the hall, but urgent works just to clean up the grounds and cover the torn edge with a tarpaulin to make the area safe has cost $16,000! The re-roofing still needs to be done, including the removal of the hazardous substance. This could cost up to $30,000 and we need to raise $15,000.
The hall hosts a Dance Studio, and many Wellington children have enjoyed and still enjoy learning to dance there. There are many community and private events, and other recreational groups practice there. We don’t want to lose this important, affordable facility and we want it to be as safe as possible for our users and our neighbours.
Can you help us raise some funds urgently?
We create and foster a healthy public community spirit in Houghton Valley; enhance engagement, cohesiveness, and resilience for the HV community; and maintain the Association's own land and Community Hall.
The money will be spent on removing the asbestos reinforced malthoid and laying a new butynol roof. If there are surplus funds raised, we will put them towards future projects to improve the facilities of the hall.
We have made it! 6 November 2023
Kia ora koutou,
Just to say we now have our new roof after over a year! The final bill came in at just over $43,000, of which we managed to raise funding for $35,000 of it, including what we received from you awesome people. We are so glad to have it all done and dusted, and it looks pretty smart too. Thanks once again!
