Young family loses home and $350,000 overnight, can't make ends meet
Wellington
Eli, Sophie and 7 month-old Charlie Rose were expecting to move into their near-completed pod-home when the pod company went bust in November. Overnight, they lost $350,000 as well as the home and their savings. Eli had leveraged everything he had to be able to fund the house.
Now, they must pay for rent for their current home as well as the mortgage for the one that was lost. With only one income and no savings, a new baby, the cost of living rising every day and interest rates predicted to hit 8% next year, they simply cannot make ends meet. On top of this, the emotional stress, anxiety and constant worry about the future has been crippling. It's a dark time full of fear and uncertainty.
Eli didn't want to ask for help, as there was a part of him that thought he had brought this on himself. It's not true, and he deserves support. It could have been any of this happened to. Together we can help ease their burden by sparing just a little of what we are so fortunate to have this Christmas. Every little bit helps.
Eli is my younger cousin and it's hard to see him and his family suffering like this - especially so close to Christmas.
Rent and mortgage, food, nappies, petrol, bills. Daily basics to get by. One day they dream of being able to have their own tiny home again but for now, they just need essentials to survive.
