My little Viking has the Blues!!!

I am bringing Hunter home for a week of R & R. Hunter failed to make progress this week and would appear he has a bad case of the blues. When this happens the centre sends them home to friends and family for a week in their home environment. After that they have set up a team at Nelson Hospital to carry on the great work up to now. Really excited to be taking him home to be a family once again.❣

    HUNTERS JOURNEY DAY 38

    #huntertheviking

So proud of my viking and what he has achieved in a short time. Physically he is exceeding our expectations and although he appears drunk, he can walk unaided for short distances. The brain is proving to be the stubborn one and he tires very easily and he struggles to control his emotions. This part of the brain suffered trauma and the doctors assured me that they expect what he is going through as normal behaviour and that he is doing ok. Looking forward to Phil coming up to Auckland to visit us this weekend. Hope to take the viking out on a small adventure.

    HUNTERS JOURNEY DAY 20

    #READYFORBATTLE#

    #YEAROFTHEVIKING!!!#

Good news! Hunter has been cleared to travel to Auckland to Wilson's rehab centre. We leave tomorrow. Its is good to have my boy coherent and stable again and we even managed a small physio session this morning. His walking, although aided has gone well but he still has no balance and obviously a very weak side from the stroke. A few nights ago I shed a few tears, was feeling very low and frankly just wanted my life back! This moment of self pity has passed and now it's all about getting Hunter's life back. We are ready for the battle and know that we face some testing times ahead. This will impact my family and my personal life so have to stay strong as a unit, as for work I guess I can only help out as much as I can when I can.

This will be our last post for a little bit and hope that the next one will be all about an amazing comeback.

Once again the support and love sent our way from everyone has been incredible, from Hunter and myself , thank you so much xox

A pot hole in the long road.

Unfortunately things went a bit downhill for Hunter yesterday. At 3pm he suddenly developed a high temperature and was struggling to understand basic instructions. This lead onto breathing difficulties, even higher temperatures, vomiting and hallucinations throughout the night. A chest xray showed a partially collapsed right lung so we thought maybe a chest infection. Caused from choking on his vomit. This morning blood tests revealed this to be correct but also a bladder infection from his catheter. So a double whammy. My little man is bruised from failed iv line attempts and they had both him and me in tears last night as he was begging me to make them stop. Hard when you cant take pain away from your kids. Currently on two antibiotics, saline drip and pain relief so should start to pick up soon.

    A pic of happier times!

1 STEP FORWARD 2 STEPS BACK!!!

Hunter had a wee setback last night - unfortunately he vomited most of the night away. Doctors think this is his body saying slow down! So today no taking him out for a walk although the museum was great! He slept until 1.30pm but is now sick of the 4 walls of his room. At least there is a nice view of the river from his window. Still no news on getting to the rehab centre.

Hunter has been making steady progress recovering from his surgery and his head is looking great! He is refusing all pain medication so must be doing ok The strong steroids hes being taking to help reduce swelling have been making him eat like a horse which is great as he lost 5kgs but is now starting to gain again. He has been busy with Phil doing hotlaps around the ward on a walking frame. Each day comes with small improvements but we are learning so much about brain injuries and how the brain works most importantly - how tired he can get so easily and realizing that time will be essential in his healing . Still no news on when we head up to Auckland for rehab as covid restrictions have meant the rehab centre cant fit us in with reduced numbers being enforced. Was hoping allowances would be made under these circumstances. Been great having Phil staying with us for the weekend to help time pass. My son is getting his sense if humor back as Phil threatened to give him a sloppy kiss since he couldn't run away- Hunters reaction was to quickly hit the nurse call button! Cracked me up!

    Welcome back buddy!

Yesterday Hunter spent most of the day recovering from his mammoth surgery. Sleeping was a major part of this. Obviously he had a massive headache to overcome so the good drugs were on hand to combat this. A MRI has confirmed that the surgeons successfully removed anything that shouldn't have been in there and miraculously avoided any further damage in the process- they are bloody legends and I cant thank them enough! Hunter will spend the week recovering from his big op and next week we should be heading to the big smoke in Auckland where the best possible treatment will hopefully get him back on his feet and eventually back to the life he had before. Once again thank you to all the amazing people I am lucky to have in our lives! Parents go hug and love your kids - we sometimes need to remember just how wonderful they are in our lives!!! Luv to all xox
