Fundraising to raise awareness of the correlation between spinal cord and brain injuries as a result of an accident.
Canterbury
After suffering a spinal cord injury when cycling headfirst into the rear of a truck and trailer unit in 2006 that left me requiring a wheelchair for mobility I have been passionate about all aspects of an SCI; it's causes, treatments, research for a cure and most importantly how best to cope with living with it.
A lot of SCIs are caused through collisions or falls that involve the head yet , as was in my case, immediate and ongoing treatment is of the 'orthopaedic' concerns of damage to vertabrae etc yet little or no treatment is done for a brain injury which can cause ongoing issues if not diagnosed.
As such I aim to raise funds to further the awareness of not just spinal cord injuries but also as importantly the possibility of accompanying brain injuries by completing a number of long distance handbike rides:
February Buller Marathon 42.2km
June Christchurch Marathon 42.2km
July Canterbury 60km
August Canterbury 80km
September Canterbury 100km
culminating in the iconic . . .
November New York City Marathon 42.2km
Your financial support would be welcomed.
I'm involved because due to my own experience of suffering a spinal cord injury (SCI) I'm passionate about it's impact on someone's life and how that person can best deal with it .
To fund travel to compete in the New York City Marathon on my handbike and to the NZ Spinal Trust and Brain Injury Association
