iNaturalist NZ – Mātaki Taiao (previously NatureWatch NZ) is NZ's biggest community of nature watchers. Help us learn more about NZ nature.
Nationwide
In June 2018, we rebranded NatureWatch NZ as iNaturalist NZ – Mātaki Taiao (https://inaturalist.nz). We've been the New Zealand part of the global iNaturalist Network since 2014, building a vibrant community of many thousand New Zealand nature watchers who have together made more than half a million observations of NZ species.
Our new name strengthens our global connections and removes the brand confusion for those of you using the free iNaturalist app. iNaturalist NZ – Mātaki Taiao! It's the same great NZ community, now with a global view, more indoor-outdoor flow, and improved security (now HTTPS).
We continue to be operated by a charitable trust of volunteers, the NZ Bio-Recording Network Trust. We're keen to support further growth of the vibrant online community on iNaturalist NZ – Mātaki Taiao by taking the fun of nature watching out into schools and communities throughout Aotearoa.
iNaturalist NZ (previously NatureWatch NZ) is a place where you can share what you see in nature, meet other nature watchers, and learn about New Zealand animals, plants, and fungi.
The world is filled with nature watchers, from trampers to hunters, birders to beach-combers, and pros to school kids. Many of us keep notes of what we find. What if all those observations could be shared online? You might learn about the butterflies that live in your neighbourhood, or discover someone who knows all about the plants in your favourite reserve. For a long time, everyone's notes have been scattered in notebooks, private spreadsheets and dusty library shelves. As a society, we have seen a lot but collectively we remain blind to most changes in our biodiversity. If enough people record their observations on iNaturalist NZ, we can change all this. We can build a living record of life in New Zealand that scientists and environmental managers can use to monitor changes in biodiversity, and that anyone can use to learn more about New Zealand's amazing natural history.
All money that we raise gets used to meet NZ's contribution to iNaturalist's server costs and code development and to help build the NZ community through online help and real world workshops and events.
