A big thank you to the team.

Our photo shows some students with the Deputy Head and Jacqui (delivering the items from Oamaru) outside one of the intact classrooms. Most children are under canvas for classrooms as 5 classrooms were destroyed following PAM.

  • Mele : Suango Primary School Update #3

Last week we were fortunate to meet the school board, head teachers, engineer and school team to discuss the planning for Suango Mele Primary School - which was very badly damaged following Cyclone PAM.

We are hopeful to commence this week. I will keep you all posted.

The goals for this school refurbishment and rebuilding is massive as damage is extensive. Our group has joined forces with like minded people keen to see good come from this disaster and particularly in the key area of education. Ratua Foundation (Isabelle Henon) have allocated VT1,500,000 to assist with classroom rebuilding at Suango Mele. (refer: www.ratuafoundation.com or www.ratua.com)

Our group with our funding raised so far is to commence with refurbishment of the Headmasters house which was damaged by PAM.

Our group has identified two areas we could assist with further rebuild input or assistance with an additional toilet block - as presently 400 students have access to only one block of six unisex toilets.

We will work with the Chairman of the School Committee and the Headmaster and staff to ensure the funding we have raised here and in Australia (by our Australian members of our team) is put to good use.

Please circulate our link so our fundraising can be increased now these projects have been clearly identified and approved .... link to all your friends and family. Our team in Vanuatu will ensure 100% of your funding gets to its destined project and not eaten away in administration costs.

Attached is a photo taken at Suango Mele School showing some of the work required on the Headmasters house. View the gallery for other photos showing the damage at the School.

Thank you to all the Mele Village supporters - this update has been delayed due to our internet being off line for a week. My apologies.

I can advise that our kindergarten rebuild at MeleMaat is taking shape and over the past few weeks we have completed the block work, have the roofing framing in place and this week (weather permitting) we should complete the roofing.

The progress has been slowed due to weather here in Vanuatu plus local holidays but now the schools are on holiday this week the team should get more work completed towards closing in the build.

We have also completed the toilet block and this should be plastered and finished to take the toilet fittings shortly. Our picture shows the completed toilet block getting an initial plastering and the roofing work being finalised ready for the iron sheeting.

Many thanks for all your support thus far and with our Australian fundraising efforts we can advise that our work for the kindergarten is moving along.
