Help IWA Fiji continue the "IWA-Cloth Nappy Project" & "Breakfast for Pregnant & New Mum's in Isolation Facilities".

Auckland

The vision of the International Women's Association (IWA) is to promote and assist the physical, educational and social welfare of women and children in Fiji".

Each year, the IWA in Fiji holds a major fundraiser to raise funds to support the work we do in our communities. Unfortunately this year, this will not happen due to COVID-19. We are now seeking your support of financial donations to assist us to continue the work we do.

Since the COVID outbreak in Fiji, the IWA has supported our Ministry of Health by providing breakfast for pregnant women and new mothers who are C-19 positive at maternity isolation facilities since June and will continue this indefinitely. We also purchased a semi-commercial washing machine and dryer to assist the women at one of these facilities with their laundry.

The "IWA CLOTH NAPPY PROJECT" was launched in May 2021 and we have since donated 200 dozen cloth nappies as well as sanitary pads to new mothers. Due to COVID protocols and risks, Doctors at the CWM Maternity Hospital have discretion for distribution as they have all the data on women coming in for clinics and are in the best position to decide who needs assistance. Feedback from the Doctors has been that the cloth nappies are very popular and a huge success. We would like to include the other Maternity Hospitals in the next phase.

IWA-PREGNANCY TEST PROJECT continues where we are the only supplier of pregnancy test kits to all our Hospitals and Health Centres thus helping save women's lives in emergencies.

Earlier this year, after Cyclone Yasa, we sent 129 primary school children back to school after their homes were destroyed and their parents had no source of income. Each child received a backpack and all their school stationary.

In November 2020, our major fundraiser was to purchase an ambulance for our Volunteer First Responders - VFR Fiji! In April 2021, we handed over a brand new, fully equipped ambulance that will be used to assist emergency services with pre-hospital and critical care.

Over the past few years, we have renovated and upgraded our Hospitals and purchased critical medical equipment. We will continue to do this when life in Fiji goes back to some normalcy and we are able to fundraise.

All funds raised will go towards supporting our women and children during these extremely trying times in Fiji.

The IWA is managed on a voluntary basis and has no expenses.

Use of funds

IWA will continue our "Cloth Nappy Project" and "Breakfast for pregnant women and new mums in isolation". Surplus funds will assist us continue our work in Hospitals.

Update - IWA Cloth Nappy Project  26 September 2021

On Saturday 25th September, we drove into the beautiful interior of Viti Levu to drop off bags of towelling nappies, nappy pins, sanitary pads, clothes pegs, face masks and porridge for new and expectant mums.

Our project encourages and supports families to save money by using nappies and less or no disposable diapers. The cost of disposable diapers is exorbitant for the average family but especially for a lot of families in rural areas and settlements.

Not having to purchase disposable diapers (or less) means families could use the money saved to enjoy healthier meals.

The IWA encourages other charities and organizations who do amazing work supporting our communities to please consider making more donations of cloth nappies instead of disposable diapers.

Disposable baby diapers produce an incredible amount of environmental waste. While disposable diapers may seem more convenient than cloth diapers, their environmental impact is terrifying. Not only do they form a sizeable portion of non-recyclable landfill waste, but they also contain many harmful chemicals that are subsequently dispersed into the environment.

To everyone who has made a financial contribution to our nappy project in the past couple of months, we thank you and appreciate your support.

Total cost spent on 200 dozen nappies, 600 nappy pins, 200 sanitary pads, 100 packs of clothes pegs, 120 bags - $8,295.
