Please help our family of 5 stay together while our big girl has urgent neurosurgery ❤️🩹
Masterton, Wellington
On Tuesday, we received the news that no parent wants to hear - MRI results show that our beautiful 5 year old’s tethered cord has worsened dramatically, and she will need urgent neurosurgery to halt its progression.
Through a combination of medical neglect (that we have fought every step of the way), covid restrictions, and short staffing, this surgery is incredibly overdue and now carries a significant risk; Ivy could lose her ability to do all the things she loves, like walking, climbing, riding her bike, and jumping on the trampoline with her brother. There is also a possibility that the surgery could affect the sensation in her arms and chest.
We are angry at the system, and upset that this has happened to our precious daughter, but right now we need to get our family of 5 up to Starship in less than a week, so we can all be there for her when she needs us.
This is going to be a tough journey, but our Ivy is made of tough stuff!
Funds will be used to help all 5 of us travel to and from Auckland (flying, as Ivy cannot cope with the neuralgic pain associated with car journeys) as well as groceries/food while we’re away, and support resources for Ivy.
IVY’S SURGERY WAS A SUCCESS! 💖 28 November 2022
Hi everybody!
Apologies, first of all, for the radio silence on our end. It’s been a whirlwind 2 weeks, but I’m so so SO pleased to say that Ivy’s surgery was a huge success! It was a tricky 7hr surgery, but Ivy was trying to climb out of bed just an hour after waking up. By day 3 post-op she was running the halls of the Starship neuro ward, and was discharged that evening. She has shown marked improvement in her gait, her bladder issues, and most importantly her chronic pain is GONE! She is back to her usual intense activity levels already, it’s impossible to keep this girl down. Photo is from the elevator as we left Starship ❤️
