Help Jaidyn Live Happily Ever After

  • First check up after being home.

      26 August 2015

Last week, Jaidyn had her first check up with Starship after her surgery.

Starship are really pleased with her progress, and the fact she is no longer on painkillers.

They have been really clear with Andy and Ness - the operation is only the start. They will not know for at least a year whether it has fused correctly.

The next two years they have to be incredibly careful that she doesn't take any knocks. It will be a year before we know if cyst is reducing in size otherwise she will need major spinal surgery to fix that.

The surgeon has explained to them, that as she grows and her spine and skull change, they will need to keep a close eye on it. Statistically it's likely she will need more surgery.

Andy and Ness and the kids wanted to say thank you from the bottom of their hearts. The donations and messages of support they have recieved from friends and strangers alike, has made a massive difference to them being able to face the whole situation together. Unbelievable.

Once this message has been sent out, they have asked me to take down the give a little page. They just really wanted to ensure you all know how Jaidyn got on, and how much they appreciated your support.

Hi Everyone - wanted to pass on these messages of the weeks progress for those who don't do facebook.

02 July - Jaidyn is doing well today apart from being in a lot of pain, they have increased her morphine dose and she has been a lot more settled since, once they have her fluids and vomiting under control she will graduate to her own ward room. Thanks for all the messages

03 July - Our darling girl has turned into the devil today she is just pissed at life in general the poor poppet! Has been taken off continuous morphine and put on oral morphine, Pamol and tramadol. She has been put back on Iv fluids as she is still vomiting and isn't getting enough fluid intake. Physio have had her standing not that she was very impressed! Still in hdu because there are no spare beds on ward so hopefully tomorrow we might get our own room- and some sleep!!

04 July -Just taken over night shift with little jai bird feeling a little bit excited right now as she has eaten toast for dad and drank lots with no vomit and no morphine!!! Fingers crossed she sleeps well on just Pamol till morning at least.

05 July - Jai still doing good today, she has moments of being really down about not walking and wanting to go home which is exhausting trying to lift her spirits but is coping pretty well considering. We have even brushed half her hair with is basically dreadlocks! And she has a nice 90's undercut on the rest of her head!

06 July - Jaidyn has just gone into X-ray to check alignment of the fusion fingers crossed it's perfect and we don't have to go back into theatre to adjust it. Surgeon happy with her today. The mood swings and nightmares are horrendous but otherwise so proud of how well she is doing

  • Starship here Jai comes

      3 May 2015

Starship have managed to find two surgeons in New Zealand who are prepared to do Jaidyns surgery. One is a specialist childrens spinal surgeon, the other a neuro surgeon who does both adults and children.

They have explained that it's important that the surgery is done soon, before she loses any movement. The surgery involves removing a 2 cm strip from around the base of her skull, and then using that and one of her ribs fusing her skull to her neck. They also put in some sort of metal reinforcing. They need to ensure they fuse it angled slightly downwards so she will be able to walk up stairs, but not too far down as then she wont be able to swallow. They go completely by feel, and they have said that one of the risks is they then have to go back in and slightly adjust it.

They are hopeful then that this will also enable the spinal fluid to flow more freely round her brain, and down into her spinal column. This should reduce the size of the syrinx, and reduce the pressure on the spinal column.

They will keep a close eye on it and if needed can also go in and put a shunt in. They don't like to do this and hope that the first operation will be successful.

They have explained to the family that a close eye needs to be kept on her, as the risk of infection is high with putting foreign bodies in that area. And also pain management is incredibly important.

Follow up care is also really important for Jaidyn, as she grows they need to keep a close eye on everything. So its great news that they have found a team that can do it in NZ, because it's the start of a long road for Jaidyn.

Andy, Ness and the kids are completely blown away by all the support from family, friends, community and people they don't even know. They are expecting to hear back soon as to a surgery date in Auckland for Jaidyn. The surgeons said hopefully in the next 8 weeks, as they don't want her to lose any movement or sensation as that is irreversible.

We feel blessed to be given this opportunity tonight to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported us recently we will never be able to say enough how much we have appreciated the donations on the give a little page, purchase of raffle tickets, offers of childcare, food, phone calls, text messages, Facebook messages and a hug and cry when we really needed one.

We are so fortunate to live in such a supportive community with not only amazing family and friends but also truly amazing people who we don't even know.

We would love to thank you all individually but it's just not possible so please know we know you have helped in some way we read all the give a little messages and Tania keeps us updated with any messages regularly and we find it truly overwhelming how kind and generous everyone is being.

We do however need to thank Rochelle and Ben Webb for this incredible auction tonight you guys have gone above and beyond to get this evening to this point and to the amazing people who have given such special items to be auctioned off there is not one thing here we wouldn't want to bid on its just mind blowing.

Also to our wonderful friends Tania and Kelvin Billingsley for not only the give a little fundraising but absolutely everything you guys do for us you have picked us up time and time again and made us see the positives we couldn't have done it without you both.

A very heartfelt thanks needs to go to both our wonderful families and incredible friends who have not only got us through this time with jaidyn but were always there for us with kalebs heart surgeries as well we are so fortunate to have you in our lives.

Peoples generosity never ceases to amaze us and we are just so humbled, all your support has taken the pressure off us so we can now just focus on getting our wee girl through this. We will keep you all updated via Facebook and give a little.

Thanks again from the bottom of our hearts

Andy, Vanessa, Connor, Kaleb and Jaidyn

  • Small Communities are the Best - Next Appt, Charity Dinner and Auction.

      15 April 2015
    Main image

Overwhelmed is how we’re all feeling right now – Everyone’s generosity from cash donations, raffle ticket sales and contributions to be auctioned at the charity dinner on the 24th in Renwick has been amazing – from the teenager who is giving her pocket money each week, to the businesses - The Brick Oven and REM who have donated large sums – it’s all very humbling.

For me it’s real a tribute to the Webb Family, and the respect they have in our community.

It all hit home for me last night when Simon Mannering, captain of the warriors and captain of the kiwis, who met the Webbs through their Make-a-Wish trip put into my bag his Kiwi game jersey from the semi-final they won against England in 2013, signed by the whole team. After he had already sorted out two signed warriors jerseys for me. He simply said we all have to do our bit for Jai. I sat out in the car afterwards and shed a tear – completely blown away.

Andy and Ness have heard from Starship and have been asked to go up for an appointment on the 24th with both the paediatric neurosurgeon and the spinal surgeon. At this appointment the surgeon will be outlining the options to Andy and Ness. From there they will know more and be able to make some decisions. Already I can see with all these trips up and down to Starship that the money already raised will be going to good use. A single return flight to Auckland from Blenheim is averaging them $550.00

Several people have asked me what the target is – and really we have no idea. The money that we are raising will go into an account for the Webb Children, it will initially be used for flights, and costs surrounding Jais surgery. They know from experience that living in Ronald Macdonald for any length of time is not cheap. As they don’t feed the families every day. Accommodation is covered, and breakfast supplied, the rest is up to the families to cover. Then it will begin to cover the loss of income for Andy who is a self-employed builder.

Once Jai returns back to Blenheim there will be rehabilitation costs. For example - We were looking at swimming lessons for end of year for her and Amy to carry on with and then realised – Jai won’t be able to turn her head to breathe anymore – so as a result will need disabled swimming lessons.

If there is extra left over – remember it won’t be the end for the Webb’s – as they do know in the next few years Kaleb is requiring a stent in his pulmonary artery, with Kaleb’s condition of only having half a heart – he requires regular check-ups and monitoring to ensure that the pumping system that he now has, is able to cope with him as he grows into teenage years. They also have no idea what other treatment Jai will require as she grows.

It really breaks my heart, to have to put all this in writing, as it makes it all that much more real. For those that know the Webb’s, realise how hard this is also – as they are very private people.

They have been contacted by media – and will be talking to them. They really want people to know how very grateful they are. Something Vanessa said also touched home “ I remember when I was pregnant with Kaleb, knowing he had hyperplastic left heart, and I picked up a magazine and read a story of a family who had just been through it all, that really gave me hope. So hopefully us telling our story might help one other family out there who may have to go through a similar thing one day.”

Charity Dinner and Auction – Rochelle Webb, Jais Aunty has done an amazing job of pulling together a Dinner and charity auction with over $10000 worth of items for the 24th April at the Woodbourne Tavern in Renwick, Blenheim. Massive thanks to Jessie Verhoef who is catering for the evening, and donating money from the dinner sales straight back to Jai.

Tickets are available at the Woodbourne, and more info on items on the Facebook event page. We really encourage anyone to come along to the night.

Raffle tickets are being sold throughout Nelson and Blenheim – Tyres and More in Nelson, REM in Rai Valley, RD1 in Rai, The Brick Oven Café, Havelock Bakery, Pelorus Preschool, Renwick Bakery, the list goes on. They will also be available at the Woodbourne on the night of the dinner.

We all feel very humbled, and to everyone, thank you for everything from the bottom of our hearts. It really is making a difference.

  • Wow - thanks so much

      30 March 2015

The word has really got out - shows the power of social media.

Thanks so much for donating. Every bit counts.

We have also been contacted by a lot of people wanting to help fundraise. So to start with we have formed a mega raffle in the Nelson and Marlborough area, with 12 awesome prizes that have been donated and we will have those tickets to sell by the end of the week. From Warriors jerseys, fishing trips, photo shoots and firewood. If anyone is interested in helping sell some - please email me direct on tania@mudbricklodge.co.nz.

Rochelle Webb - Jai's aunty has launched into organising a fundraising auction dinner to be held end of April at the Woodbourne Tavern in Renwick. Tickets for that will come on sale soon. I will keep everyone posted.

Andy and Ness are still waiting to hear back from Starship on any plans. Waiting is a challenge in itself.

Thanks again for your support. We will keep you all posted.
