Off to Nationals for Swimming

  • Bay of Plenty Champs 8th - 10th Aug 2014

      18 August 2014

This weeked I travelled over to Baywave at Mount Maungaui to take part in the Bay of Plenty championships. When I got there I was surprised to find there were over 400 swimmers and they had come from more than 4 regions arund the North Island (Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Waikato, Hawkes Bay and Poverty Bay). We arrived at 1.40pm and the pool was heaving. I'd entered 10 events and knew that there was only one event that was a timed final so the rest of them I had to swim fast in the first session to make it into the finals. Friday started well. 1st event - 100 Individual medley, 5th place,0.49 sec PB with 1:15.72 2nd event - 200m breastroke, 3rd place, 1.08 sec PB with 3:02.72 3rd event - 50m backstroke, 6th place, 5.77 sec PB with 35.06 so I'd made all the finals, even backstroke in which I was seeded 20th. Finals arrived - my first medal came quick in the 100 IM, I secured 3rd place with another PB of 1:13.83 Next came the 200 breastroke, another PB and a 5th place. Lastly 50m backstroke, I couldn't quite beat my qualifying time so I came in 7th but I was still really pleased with it. Off to the motel at 8.45pm, exhausted but happy. Saturday on paper was my strongest day so I was looking forward to pushing myself and my aim was to get the Bay of Plenty record in the 50m freestyle. So we were back at the pool for 6.40am ready to go. 200m freestyle, good start, 2nd place with another PB dropping 4.67 secs to 2:16.92 Next came 50 breastroke, another PB of 37.76 and ranked 1st. I could feel things were going well, and I was feeling really strong so I went into my 50m freestyle buzzing. I had the perfect race, everything clicked into place and I finished quickly, looking up at the scoreboard I was thrilled to see a time of 27.51 and 1st place, I had done it! A new BOP record and a New Zealand age group Championship qualifying time. I'd dropped 0.67 secs and lowered the record by half a second. I felt on top of the world. Lastly I had to get focussed again and race the 200 IM, another PB, I'd dropped 3.57 secs and came in 2nd. What a session, it was hard to think about how I could top it and get faster for the finals as there were a few swimmers who were close in times. Finals time..... 200m freestyle, another PB but edged into 4th, 50m breastroke, disaster struck when my goggles came down but I managed to still come in 2nd. 50m freestyle, I couldn't really top my record so despite going under 28 secs again I was beaten into 2nd from a very fast 11 year old. My only positive was that he didn't swim faster than my record. 200IM, I was shattered and I felt slow on my backstroke but I fought back and came 2nd. I couldn't have done any more. I was thrilled with the day, another 3 medals and a record, but I was ready to leave at 8.30pm that night. Last day - Sunday and it felt like I had been at the pool for weeks but I knew I could get more medals if I remained focussed. 400m freestyle, a timed final thankgoodness, another PB with 5:01.35 but because the age groupe was 13 and under I finished in 12th. 100 Breastroke, another PB by 2.09 to 1:23.20 and another 2nd place. 100 freestyle, another PB by 2.03 secs and another 2nd place. Last session of the day and 2 finals to go.....100 breastroke, what a race, so close but with my team cheering me on I touched 1st with another PB. A gold medal at last, now I had one of each colour. Last event, 100 freestyle, another PB and another silver medal, I didn't really have anything else to give so I was pleased with my result. so that was the end of my swim meet..... 9 out of 9 finals, 14 of out 19 swims I got a PB, 6 medals and a BAY OF PLENTY RECORD!!!!! a big thanks to those people who have sponsored me already, you really helped me to get this record. So whats next..... the 100m freestyle record, so watch this space

  • Swimming: New kid on block stands out for club

      18 August 2014

SWIM Rotorua enjoyed another excellent weekend of racing at the Bay of Plenty short course championships. The event was held at Baywave in Mount Maunganui, in their 25m pool, last weekend and attracted swimmers from Waikato, Hawke's Bay, Poverty Bay, Taranaki and Bay of Plenty. New kid on the block James Baldwin produced a phenomenal tour de force to take home six medals and one Bay of Plenty 12-years age-group record. Despite being a relative newcomer to the sport, Baldwin displayed his competitiveness and skill to win the 100m breaststroke in 1min 22.02sec. Baldwin collected four silver medals to demonstrate his versatility in the 50m and 100m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 200m medley. His heat time of 27.51 seconds in the 50m freestyle smashed the BOP record. Not quite done, Baldwin also captured a bronze medal in the 100m medley with 1min 13.87sec.

  • swim rotorua winter meet 19/07/2014

      22 July 2014

I was looking forward to this meet as it was at my home pool and I was entered for my favourite events. My target going in was to get a qualifying time for the AIMS games meet in September and to win the best overall 12 year old. I started quite well with a 2nd place in my 200IM, this was good as I was up again one of my biggest competitors who is older, stronger and who has been swimming longer. Next came my 200m breastroke, again a 2nd place but then I seemed to find my speed and I came 1st in both the 50m freestyle and 400m freestyle. Next came the 100m freestyle, a very good 3rd place as it's one of my weaker events. back to winning ways in my 100m and 50m breastroke. My last event was my 100IM, 2nd place but more importantly a great PB and my qualifying time for AIMS games. Finally the announcement for the overall positions - 1st place in the U12 boys. It was a great meet with some tough opposition that pushed me, so I was really pleased with my 1st place.

  • Taupo swimming Xcelerate your points meet 7/06/2014

      22 July 2014

This is the start of the season so I was looking forward to seeing the progress from my off season training. The meet was run over 2 days so it involved early mornings and late nights making the 1 hour journey to Taupo from Rotorua. I swam really well and out of the 9 events I entered I got 8 PB's. I got 3 gold medals in 50m freestyle, 50m breastroke and 200m breastroke. I got 2 silver medals in 200m freestyle and 800m freestyle (this was the first time I had swum this event - 32 lengths ahhhhhhhh) and then 4 bronze medals in my other events. 9 medals out of 9 events was a great boost and so it led me to win 1st place in the males u12 age group. What a great start it the season

  • Greerton Winter Championships 06/07/2014

      6 July 2014

This is one of the big meets on the calendar and quite a challenge for me as the age group is U13 and I'm still 12 so it means I'm up against some big boys. it was run over 2 days which was tiring as it meant a lot of travelling and early mornings as the pool is about 1 hour away from home. It's also a meet where there are heats in the morning and finals in the evening. My target was to make a final. To say I was swimming fast was an understatement, I was flying. The 400m was a timed final and I came 8th, pretty good I thought especially with a PB. The 100m freestyle I did not make the final despite a 5 second PB, I came 13th. all the rest of my events I progressed to the finals!!! Overall I came away with 2 silver medals in 100m and 200m breastroke, and 3 bronze medals in 50m breastroke, 50 freestyle and 200m IM. Out of the 15 heats/finals I swam in, I got 14 personal best times. My 50m freestyle went down to 28.18 secs which is only 0.18 secs of the Bay of Plenty Record. it was an awesome meet and I was pleased to see that all my training was paying of.
