Sharing my time & knowledge with youth has been my lifetime goal & what better place to do it than on a yacht on beautiful Lake Tarawera
Bay of Plenty
Hi. My name is Jason, I live aboard a 32ft sailing Catamaran on the beautiful Lake Tarawera near Rotorua.
I have been involved working with youth both professionally & voluntarily for the last 30+ years including the last 10 years on the lake.
I run free youth trips for disadvantaged youth aged 10+ on my yacht, trips normally run for 2 nights (3 days).
Activities involve pest control on the DOC land surrounding the lake, checking & clearing rat traps & filling bait stations, possum trapping & walaby culling (Rotorua has a massive walaby infestation)
Other activities involve hikes, (Lake Tarawera has some stunning hikes to waterfalls & to adjoining Lakes too), trail clearing, beach rubbish clean-ups, swimming, bombing jump rock, geothermal hotpools, learning to sail, anchor & moor the yacht + many other life skills including cooking, washing, gardening & hunting.
Funds raised from this page will go towards clothing (jackets, gumboots) & life jackets for the youth. Also food, gas (for running the yacht when unable to sail) & dinghy fuel which we use for exploring & beach clean-ups.
Extra funds will also be used to purchase more rat traps, bait stations & possum traps + help keep all safety equipment up-to-date on the yacht itself.
The youth gain so much confidence from these trips & many become regulars who are keen to learn more about conservation & enjoy life at an alternative more quiet pace.
Any help at all is greatfully received.
Thank you for your time.
Funds raised go toward funding more youth trips + clothing & safety gear + supplies needed (food, fuel etc) for each trip. As well as purchasing extra traps, baits & sundries to expand my pest management around the lake.
Expanding the experience 19 March 2024
I've still been running as many amazing youth trips as funding allows, unfortunately, I'm still struggling to run as many as I have demand for.
I've met up with some great lads, some who will definitely be regulars & thrive on what I have to offer them, others just loved the experience of just being able to do a one-off trip also.
I have expanded the experience adding over 40 more rat traps, another 20 possum traps & 8 more bait stations which all were greatfully donated from goodsorts far & wide. Thank you so much for these, they add so much to the experience these kids get being able to see the great changes to the wildlife & vegetation in the areas I'm protecting with their help.
I'm still meeting up with new families who have youth keen to join in, so have plenty keen for when the funding allows.
Unfortunately donations have run dry for now so I'm struggling to fund the food, gas & clothing (gumboots, jackets & warm gear) needed to keep running as many trips as I'd like.
Any help is so greatfully received & all goes to such a great cause, so please dig deep & donate weather it be though this give a little page, direct deposit, catching up with me on the lake, food, clothing, gumboots etc, it all helps tremendously.
To those who have helped so far, thanks a million, you've made such a positive change in these kids lives.
Thank you so much for your generous donation. I have a few lads keen to get out on the lake these holidays, this will help alot. So cool.
Thank you so much. I have a few new lads lined up for school holiday outings. Greatly appreciated.
Hey mate, thanks heaps for the donation, greatly appreciated. Long overdue for a catch up on the water. Hope to see you over the summer at some stage.
