  • March update

      9 March 2026

The new plan is for Amber to move on to Trodelvy. This treatment is more intensive, comes with stronger and more difficult side effects, and will need to be administered in Dunedin rather than at Dunstan Hospital.

It’s important to be open about what this next step means.

This chemotherapy is not a cure! It is a life-prolonging treatment rather than a life-saving one. If it works for Amber, it may help slow the progression of the cancer and give her more precious time.

It is also a treatment she would need to remain on indefinitely - for as long as it continues to work.

Amber has not given up hope. She is determined to keep fighting and to take every option available to her, but the reality is that this treatment is about giving her more time, rather than curing the disease.

At this stage, we don’t know how many good days Amber will get while on this treatment.

The biggest challenge is that this medication is not funded, and it costs approximately $20,000 for every 3 weeks of treatment. If this chemo works, we are looking at $345,000 annually.

With this in mind, I will soon be sharing details of some upcoming fundraisers to help support Amber and her family through this next stage. If anyone would like to sponsor, donate, or contribute auction or raffle items, we would be incredibly grateful.

Thank you again for continuing to support the Nyhon family during this incredibly difficult time. Your kindness, generosity, and encouragement truly mean the world.

  • February update

      9 March 2026
    Main image

During a good week between chemotherapy appointments, Amber and the family took a much-needed trip to Perth to visit Amber’s brother Lee and his partner Britteny. It was a special opportunity to relax, reset, and spend some precious time together.

Towards the end of the trip, Amber began noticing changes in her primary breast tumor, including pain and discomfort, and she had a strong feeling that it had grown.

After returning home, Amber spoke with her medical team who arranged an urgent CT scan on Thursday, followed by an in-person appointment with her oncologist in Dunedin on Friday. The results confirmed what Amber had feared but hoped wouldn’t be the case… the tumors had grown, meaning the most recent chemotherapy treatment that was started in December, 4 rounds of Enhertu, has not been effective.

  • January update

    Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a quick update and say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported the Nyhon family so far. Your messages, donations, and kindness have meant more than we can say.

Let’s begin where I left off on the 7th of January.

January 10th - Amber and I travelled to Houston, Texas for appointments at MD Anderson Cancer Centre. We left feeling positive, knowing they have many more treatment options available than what we currently have access to here in New Zealand. The plan at the time was for Amber to return home and have a CT scan before heading back to Houston a month later for a liver TACE procedure (a treatment that delivers chemotherapy directly into the liver tumour, and the body carries the waste away).

Unfortunately, the CT scan didn’t show the results we had hoped for. The tumors in Amber’s lungs had grown in size, and the liver now had two tumors. In order for the TACE procedure to go ahead, the scans needed to show stability with no further growth.

As you can imagine, this news was devastating.

(I only have minimal characters per update and have a bit to catch you all up on - so bear with as I do a few posts)

  • Thank you 🙏🏻

      7 January 2026

Thank you so much to everyone for your incredibly generous donations , we are truly grateful for the support!

If you’re local to Central Otago, we have some fun fundraising events in the pipeline for February and March. If you’re a business or individual who would like to donate a product, service, or experience, we’ll be running auctions and raffles and would love to hear from you - please feel free to reach out.

    Amber update:

Amber has been undergoing chemotherapy, with her most recent treatment just before Christmas. Unfortunately, this has been quite tough on her, particularly with ongoing nausea. We are now pursuing second opinions, with the first being a video consultation with The Royal Marsden Hospital in London.

On 11 January, Amber and I (Anna) will be flying to Houston, Texas, for in-person appointments at MD Anderson. We’re hopeful these next steps will bring more clarity and options moving forward.

Thank you again for all the kindness, support, and encouragement - it means more than we can say xx
