Empowering Women, Protecting our Oceans
History is being made on the high seas! The Hinemoana II, a waka hourua (double-hulled canoe) setting sail for Tonga, welcomes Joelene Busby-Cole. She joins Aunofo Havea, the first Tongan captain, and Fani Bruun, the first Samoan captain, in a groundbreaking display of Pacific women's leadership in cultural preservation and ocean exploration.
Busby-Cole is no stranger to waka hourua. With over 20 years of experience paddling and captaining, she carries on the legacy of her Papa/Uncle, Sir Hector Busby, and her grandfather, Tata Mei. She is not only a dedicated advocate for traditional waka voyaging but also a history-maker herself – the first wāhine Māori to captain a waka hourua and to build one for Aotearoa (New Zealand).
The Hinemoana II's mission goes beyond cultural exchange. This dedicated crew is raising crucial funds for humpback whale monitoring in Tonga. These majestic creatures are a vital link in the global ecosystem, and by collecting data on their migration patterns and health, the crew aims to contribute to stronger whale protection strategies. This research not only benefits the Pacific but sends a powerful message worldwide about the importance of ocean conservation.
"This is an honour beyond words," says Busby-Cole. "We share a deep commitment to preserving our cultural heritage and protecting our oceans. Supporting this voyage isn't just about an incredible journey; it's about empowering Pacific women and future generations."
Donations will enable Joelene to contribute to the scientific research and cultural preservation aspects of Hinemoana II's whale protection mission. The funds will be used for travel costs for Joelene to be a part of the project.
