Josh's Journey

  • All Paid Up

      23 March 2016

Hey Everyone Just a quick update, Sorry there haven't been any lately.

Firstly THANK YOU all so so so much. We managed to raid $4400 for Josh and his family and I can confirm the money has been transferred to them into an account called HOLIDAY... I can't wait till josh is well enough to be able to finally get that trip he has waited so long for.

Also just a quick update on Josh, things are still heading in the right direction in regards to the infection. He is still in Auckland with Nicola at the Childrens Rehab Centre and last week he got his cast cut down from concrete pants to concrete shorts. So he's still immobile but he is getting better. They are hoping to remove the cast and put him in a brace in the next few weeks. There has been no indication of when he can head home as yet. Ben and James are still missing him and Nic but are managing to get up to auckland as often as possible.

Again thank you so much from myself and the O'Connells!!!

  • Infection FINALLY showing signs of leaving!

      23 February 2016

Heres an update from Nic from a few days ago.... finally some good news in regards to the infection. Josh still has a lot of healing and recovery ahead but hopefully this is the beginning of the end of this infection thats caused so much damage.

"Josh spent today at starship. He had a section of his cast removed so Dr's could check his wound (where they put in the pins 3 weeks ago) it looks good, they moved the hip under xray and it is still holding in place with the pins! They've then rotated his leg a bit straighter and then patched his cast up again. He is quite sore now which sux but stoked with the news that the pins and cast are getting things to heal! Had blood tests too and his crp (which shows infection or inflammation levels) are the lowest they've ever been so the infection is finally on its way out!"

  • Thanks from Nicola and James

      16 February 2016

Heres a quick message posted by Nicola :)

"I am truly humbled and completely overwhelmed by the level of support my family has been given these past few months. The kind messages, donations to give a little page, the meals for James and Ben, cards and notes, gifts, and all the prayers plus countless other kindnesses, I have no way to tell you exactly blessed I feel to have so many genuinely caring and wonderful people in our lives. I know James feels the same way. Saying thank you doesn't quite seem adequate enough. I hope you all know how much we've treasured having such amazing friends. Thank you ?"

Hey everyone, sorry I haven't updated this recently, life has be chaos! Here are the last few updates from Nicola, josh's mum! Finally they have had some good news about the infection!! whoop whoop.

on the 11th of Feb Nic wrote

"We finally got some good news! Joshua had a CT scan at starship yesterday, it showed that the pins are holding the hip together nicely and things have finally started to heal without any movement from being in the hip spika! So the plan going forward will be to get a new narrower full cast on next week (one that allows him to fit into a wheelchair) and then all going well 3 weeks after that they will look at having the plaster only going to his knee so he can get a bit more freedom and movement in both legs. No talk of how long the spika will stay on overall yet though but we're so relieved that we have proof that he's on the mend finally!"

also Josh is able to have some schooling in the rehab centre on the 9th of Feb Nic updated us with this

"Well today has been an interesting day. Josh started school today, we went and met his teacher and saw the classroom, he was not impressed. He started physio today also, he can work on his upper body and get his good leg moving from his bed, he was not impressed. He cannot understand why he should have to do anything else when he has told everyone that he has to stay in bed and get his hip better, I actually don't blame him, that is exactly why we're here so he can stay in bed and get his hip better, it's a very logical argument lol. He is going to be testing the patience of the people he met today I think! They have an awesome set up here though, the classroom is just down the hall and we can push him there in his bed. The physio room is fully equipped and if he gives everyone a chance he'll do well. Some grumpy and amusing times ahead I think!"

Lets all hope that things continue to improve for this brave boy!!!!!!

Here is a link to the latest article on stuff.co.nz too http://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/news/76821230/autistic-boys-massive-pain-threshold-hides-true-extent-of-injury

Also last weekend James got to take their youngest boy Ben to Auckland to see his mum and big bro. Whilst there Ben got to enjoy some time with both his parents at the same time and they enjoyed a great day out... here's a pic of the 3 of them doing something 'normal'!

  • Josh made the paper & Ben started intermediate

Hey Guys, the Manawatu Guardian featured Josh on their front page yesterday! follow the link below to read the story:

    http://manawatuguardian.communitynews.co.nz/html5/index.html?page=1

Also yesterday Josh was moved from Starship Hospital to the Wilson Centre which is a children's rehabilitation centre. They are better equipped and have better facilities to deal with Josh now he is in a full spica cast. Nicola has said he's pretty unsure of the place at the moment as it's very different to the hospital environment but she's hopefully he will relax over the next few days. the wilson centre has a wheelchair capable of getting josh out and about so she is hoping to get him out into the beautiful gardens of the wilson centre for a look around.

This weekend James is able to take Ben with him to visit in Auckland which is just awesome. Throughout the entire ordeal Ben, who can't be forgotten, has been an absolute star! He's not had his mum around for many months now, has started intermediate and has also had his holidays disrupted, but despite all this he remains happy and a super strong support for his brother, mum and dad!

Heres some photos of Ben on his first day at intermediate!!!!

  • Big Day for Josh

      28 January 2016

Hey Everyone, Thanks all so much for you donations so far. I have an update from Nicola and James and unfortunately it's not the positive news they were hoping for. Things are only getting harder for these guys so please please keep sharing Josh's Journey page and getting these guys as much support financially as we can muster up.

thanks again so so much for supporting these guys.

    Nic's Update

Joshua has had a big day today up at starship hospital. He's had a top of the line scan and they found out that he also has some damage to his hip socket which they did not realise so that is complicating things, also the top of the hip ball has broken off due to the infection corroding the bone, they have had to put some pins through the bone to hold it in place. He is now in a hip spika (which is practically a cast over half his body) he is totally immobilised in his bed and can't sit up. He will be at starship for the weekend and then moved to a rehabilitation centre in Auckland for two weeks, they have better facilities to help him navigate the huge concrete pants he's wearing. After two weeks he'll have another set of scans and a new cast put on to slowly straighten the hip while it's healing. Not the positive news we were hoping for, so now all we do is wait again while his Drs come up with a new plan that covers the info they found today. He is so incredibly brave, it's so scary what he has had to cope with and he's been amazing, probably coping better than me coz I'm really missing James and Ben like crazy and that makes bad news feel even worse
