JR's battle againts a rare disease Cryptococcus Fungal Meningitis.

  • Update on Jr's recovery progress againts a rare disease Cryptococcus Fungal Meningitis

      14 April 2021

I wanted to express my big thank you for all your help, donations and prayers, love and concern for my brother's recovery.

It has been a roller coaster journey on Jr's recovery. He was intubated twice while he was at Chonghua Hospital. After his 15 days treatment for the Cryptococcus Fungal Meningitis, Doctor finally removed his intubation but not long after, his airways got swollen so he was intubated again. It was a very difficult time as Doctors advised us that in his condition it will takes months and months for him to recover. Due to very high hospitalisation bills and financial issue we could not anymore afford his stay at Chonghua Hospital therefore, we have decided to move Jr to a public hospital Vicente Sotto Hospital to continue his medication. Due to covid pandemic situation in the Philippines most of public hospitals are full with covid patients and that was the main reason why Jr at the first place was not admitted to a public hospital. However, we do not have other option but to take Jr to a public hospital so he can continue his medication. During his stay at the public hospital he has been move few times from one ward to another ward due to covid situation in order to accommodate other patients. After a long journey, he is finally been discharged from the hospital and he is now continuing his medication at home.

Please see attached short video on his recovery.

Again, thanks a lot to everyone's effort to save my brother's life. Bless your heart!❤🙏

  • Jr's progress in fighting a rare disease Cryptococcus Fungal Meningitis

Jr has been awake for the whole process of his 15 days treatment in the Intensive Care Unit, where he has been intubated and restraint as he needed 70% oxygen support from a ventilator. Within that period, due to medications his platelets and hemoglobin levels was very low. Because of his low platelets he started having hematoma on his arms. Therefore, Doctor advised to give him blood and platelet transfusions. These blood and platelets transfusion is very expensive process and they had to do it several times during his treatment.

Despite of the all the pain, terrible headaches and discomfort due strong medication Jr has experienced, Jr never failed to keep fighting. He keeps his positive spirit high. After 15 days of his treatment, he finally gets his oxygen back and his been extubated. Jr so far is slowly recovering, his headaches are not as bad as before, he said it’s bearable. Doctor's still giving him medication for his swollen brain due to that infection. His platelets level is going up; however, his hemoglobin level is still low and under monitoring. He is now slowly eating food which is a very good progress. Now, Jr has been moved to a private room, a much cheaper room than in an Intensive Care Unit room.

During the 15 days treatment in the ICU, me and my husband had already sent NZD $23,000.00 for Jr’s medications as hospital won't give you medications if you do not pay first, my sister Cindy who is looking after Jr at the hospital has been buying Jr’s medications every single day from the hospital pharmacy. So far, we had already paid roughly NZD $17,000 against the hospital bill. Currently there is an outstanding bill of roughly NZD $11,000.00, this is not including professional fees of all 8 specialists which is at the moment on pending status, these fees will only show up closer to discharge day.

Due to the long process of his treatment and the uncertainty of how long he needs to be in the hospital, we really cannot do it alone. In this difficult time, we would like to ask to please pray for his continuous fast recovery. We are really in need of financial assistance too as the hospital bill is increasing.

We are all going through economic uncertainty and financial hardship, but we humbly ask those who have kind heart that any amount will do and appreciated. We are very grateful to receive any donations to help for my brother's recovery. Thank you very much for your help.

To all who have donated, thank you so much! We really appreciate all your help and bless your heart! I will keep you all posted on Jr’s progress.
