OUT OF THE BLUE

It’s often said that the strength of a woman is undeniable—but being blindsided by triple negative breast cancer is something no one is ever prepared for.

In the past four weeks, our beautiful friend Jude received this diagnosis. Her bright smile has been replaced with fear and uncertainty, and those closest to her are heartbroken.

Jude has spent over 25 years serving her community on the frontline as a paramedic, including Wellington Free Ambulance and now Hato Hone St John. She became an Intensive Care Paramedic and now works as a Clinical Manager, mentoring others. She has supported people through their darkest moments with compassion and strength, even while managing her own PTSD.

Triple negative breast cancer is aggressive, with a high risk of recurrence. Jude needs Keytruda, an immunotherapy drug that helps the immune system fight cancer. It is not funded in New Zealand for early-stage treatment and costs around $70,000.

She faces 6 months of chemotherapy, followed by surgery and radiation—an incredibly tough year ahead.

Although Jude has insurance, it only covers administration, leaving a shortfall of about $57,000. Each round costs $8,485, and she needs eight rounds, alongside other ongoing costs.
