What is the difference between a 'therapy' dog and a well-trained pet (which would cost far less and achieve the same result)?

Hi Cath

A therapy dog has specialised training with an experienced trainer for 4 months. He is trained to meet the needs of our autistic son and exposed to and trained in a variety of situations that will be part of his life with our son.

A therapy dog has entry as a working dog wearing his working coat to most environments - of course with the permission of management eg malls, movie theatres, cafes, swimming complexes etc, all places that can cause considerable stress and anxiety for our son.

A well trained pet doesn't have this access or degree of training :)
