After the earthquakes, our sports-mad community has lost our pool. We need a new one!
Marlborough
Kaikoura has always been isolated and our sports-mad community has relied heavily on our Lions Pool, which suffered serious damage in the 2016 earthquake. Sports and recreation is crucial to recovery from a disaster like this, and we would love something good to come out of all the heartache. Please help us raise funds for a new pool facility - this is huge for us and without it life will be pretty tough for our young people, our old people, and the whole community!
The numbers:
The existing pool is insured for $300,000. To build a new facility will cost between four and six million. We have already around $1million in council and philanthropic donations. We have strong interest from funding organisations in investing in this project. The more public funding we raise, the more leverage we have to raise finds from those organisations.
This page is administered by the Kaikoura Community Trust. The trust was put in place by the Kaikoura community, with the support of Kaikoura District Council. The trust is overseeing the building of the new pool, with the future of Kaikoura firmly in mind. In a ratepayer survey in January 2017, a new pool and an indoor sport and recreation centre were identified as the clear number one and two priorities in the recovery effort.
The Combined Sports Clubs was set up to raise money for new sports facilities, and all funds raised through this page will go towards a new pool complex.
Kaikoura Pool Update 21 February 2018
Thankyou to all the amazing people who have donated so far. It has been a very busy year - we have now completed an independent feasibility study for the new pool and are working hard on securing a site.
Now that we have a better idea of what the project will be, we have re-opened this page (see below).
Our community is deeply grateful to anyone able to share this page and promote the project. We will be updating regularly, but please feel free to contact us for more information.
Thanks again,
Kaikoura Sport & Recreation Leadership Team
