Our response to the housing crisis - building houses to give our elderly security, stability, and a place to call home (Ngā Whare Haumaru)
Whanganui, Manawatu-Wanganui
Across Whanganui, the housing crisis is placing increasing pressure on older people. Local agencies report that more elderly residents are facing housing insecurity, with some experiencing homelessness for the first time in their lives—and numbers living in cars are rising.
In response to this need, we will build two 1-bedroom rental homes within our existing papakāinga. With the land already secured, each home can be built for $149,000. These long-term rentals, set aside for our elderly, will ensure our kaumātua can live their later years with dignity and peace of mind.
Wai Ora Christian Community Trust (CC35808) is partnering with the combined churches group, City Vision, to bless the community and support fundraising efforts. Church volunteers will assist with finalising the housing project once the homes are built. $20,000 has been donated as seed money.
Your support matters - older people shouldn’t have to face insecure housing. By giving, you are directly addressing an urgent need in our community and helping some of the most vulnerable residents find stability.
The first home will begin once 75% of the funds for one home is raised. Church volunteers will generously contribute their time and skills on some of the project stages.
Every donation brings these much-needed homes closer to reality, giving kaumātua a safe place to live and a welcoming community to belong to. Together, we can make a real and lasting difference.
For over 34 years, Wai Ora Christian Community Trust has empowered whānau through social services, training, and social housing. Guided by Christian kaupapa Māori values we seek to nurture resilience, dignity, and connected communities for all.
Funds will be used to build two 40 sqm long-term rental homes for the elderly, each costing $149,000, covering construction, materials, furnishings and fixtures, landscaping, utilities and safety compliance.
