Karen's Getaway

  • Day 176-SUCCESS!!!

      28 July 2014

YAYAYAY! After what has seemed like forever Mum is finally well enough to go on her trip so 2 tickets to Port Douglas in Cairns have been purchased! There are better medical facilities there so that's what they chose and they have nearly $4,200 to spend on the trip thanks to you guys! I am honestly not sure if anyone at all reads these and even if you do I've probably already emailed you or tagged you on Facey but I'm just making sure I've got my bases covered! After initially being pretty pissed off at me for organising this I'm pleased to say both mum and dad are now super super excited for a holiday. They're off in September so will try to remember to put pics up, weeeeee!!!! THANK YOU AGAIN

  • Day 121

      4 June 2014

Wowee this has been going on for a long time, sorry about the lack of updates everyone! We got some bad news and things were looking pretty average for a while but Mum's now had several rounds of chemo and seems to be responding pretty well to it given she's cranking out a walk around the lake once a week! At this stage she's about halfway through so hopefully it won't be long before holiday time and she can tan her lovely bald head. I headed home to hang out with her for a week and she is in incredibly good spirits and generally astonishing people with a level of optimism most healthy people would struggle to maintain, so typical really. I will update again when there is something new to say but I'm hoping she'll fly through the rest of her chemo and I won't need to do another update until I email you all with a picture of her clutching her tickets to Raro!! Thanks again wonderful humans xxxx Kristin

  • Day 57, eek

      31 March 2014

Hello again! Been a while again but to be honest everything's going swimmingly and there's not much to update! Mum is recovering from surgery incredibly well, could even hack a 45 minute walk in the redwoods, what a beast. She's decided to go ahead with chemo to get rid of the microscopic bits that were left behind, a HUGE step for her given her usual stance on natural healing etc etc. It's very scary for her and it will mean more of a delay on the holiday (won't be finished chemo until August) but at least she'll have something to look forward to when it's all over, yay! In the mean time she's still being very well looked after and overloaded with chocolates which she really needs coz now she's way too skinny haha. Will try be more reliable with the old updates but hopefully things will keep going smootly and here'll be nothing to update! Thank you all again you amazing people. Kristin x

  • Day 39

      13 March 2014

Ok it's been a while! Have been trying to keep a low profile on this whole thing coz of Mum's privacy concerns and such buuuut there has been some very very good news! Mum's final pathology report has come through and she is TOTALLY CLEAR OF CANCER. It is a total total miracle, she's back at home now going for short walks and already living a back to normal-ish life which is awesome coz her birthday is this month and it should be practically pain free! Her church has been cooking her meals left right and centre and she's getting heaps of visits which is great as well. Am thinking of closing the fundraiser soon as I've been totally blown away by the donations and am already well beyond what I was expecting so if you know anyone else keen to help tell them to get in quick! Thanks again fabulous people, Kristin x

  • Day 17

      20 February 2014

Nearly out of hospital! Can't believe it's been a week since the surgery and she's already almost outta there. Of course they cut a ridiculous amount of stuff out of her (a small rugby ball sized tumour and a cricket ball sized tumour in case you wanted to know) so she's fairly immobile but she can go for short walks and is is not much pain at all any more! Doc says she won't really be able to lift anything for another 12 weeks which will mean holiday will happen around about June we think. That means there's still plenty of time to get donating if you know someone else who might be keen to help! Of course if you're reading this you don't have to because you are fabulous and already donated. K xx

  • Day 13

      16 February 2014

Ok I may get in trouble for writing this but seeing as you've all donated and I know at least one person reads this I thought you should know. The surgery that was deemed impossible just a few weeks ago has happened. The tumours are out and they were huge, she's recovering really well and it appears as if they've gotten rid of it for now. So essentially a miracle has happened. On top of that today my sisters handed me $200 raised by their youth group/church which I had no idea was happening. It's all been such a crazy overwhelming journey for all of us but I think giving Mum the tickets and showing her all the people from all over the country and the world that donated will absolutely blow her away. Really not far away from the target now so by the time she's recovered from surgery she should be good to go!! People are awesome. xxxx Kristin

  • DAY 9

      11 February 2014

Sorry about the lack of updates team! I have good news and bad news about the fundraiser, bad news is one of mum's friends let slip so it is no longer a secret mission. She freaked out a bit at first so that's why I've removed a lot of the updates and details from the page, she HATES being the centre of attention. The good news is she has no idea how much we've raised and the even better news that totally eclipses the bad news is that she had a very successful operation today. The doctors initially said they didn't think they'd be able to get the tumour out but they have so things are looking up big time! I told Dad how much you have all put in so far and he was absolutely gobsmacked, he's promised to keep that part a secret! Thank you again to all who have donated so far, it makes me realise how lucky I am to know so many awesome people (if you donated and I don't know you, you're possibly even more awesome). xx Kristin
