  • Progress Update

      12 August 2021

    Hi All,

It has been fantastic to get the support that we have had, thanks to all of you.

Due to your support we have engaged with the contractors and the council, and the work has started today. Below is a copy from our facebook page post sharing the news. We have uploaded photos on the page as well so please go and check it out as well! https://www.facebook.com/friendsofkaroricemetery

Woo hoo! This morning Karl & Gavin removed the large wooden cross from where it stood on the top of the first Catholic area from 1892 until 2019. It's going to Gavin's workshop to be restored, which will only take a few weeks, then it will be safely mounted again in it's original position. After the trees all round have been removed it should once again be visible as it was when first erected and for many years thereafter. We've been able to embark on this exciting heritage restoration project - our first - thanks to the generosity of many people who have donated to our fundraising initiative - thanks to each and every one of you for making sure we not only raised enough to do the restoration, but a little bit more too for some additional work tidying up the general environs. The cross, which is 3.3 metres long/tall was too big for Gavin's ute, so it's been tucked away safely in the Shelter until he can return with his trailer.
