Kate & Madi - Sailing RS Feva World Champs 2022 in Weymouth, UK.

  • Final day

    Hi team,

We are bringing a championship trophy and two newly crowned world champions back to Maraetai, Kate and Madi have done it, they finished their regatta in 8th place overall and first females making them the RS Feva Female world champions for 2022. All their hard work and training has come through. Your support throughout the past few months has been amazing and the girls and families are extremely grateful!

The girls sailed 2 races on the final day but it wasn't smooth sailing. They came into the races with a 3 point gap between them and the Netherlands girls team, so they had to beat the Netherlands crew in the races to clinch the world title. They had a good start and showed great speed in the first race to beat the Netherlands team by 10 places meaning they had a 7 point lead over them with 1 race to go. A 7 point lead means the Netherlands team have to beat Kate and Madi by 8 positions in the race. Which had proved a hard task because the Maraetai girls had shown great consistency in gold fleet with only one race outside the top 30 placings. Whereas the Netherlands team had a few worse scores they had to carry. This meant it was a question of could Kate and Madi hold their nerve and beat the Netherlands girls or be no worse than 8 places behind them.

To add to the tension their was some starting penalties handed out and 6 boats were disqualified for being over the line early, meaning an early shower. The girls remained cool, calm and collected and listened and took onboard sage advice to not get any penalties. So they started the 8th and final race in a safe position. It wasn't the best way to start but safe was what they needed to win and their wise young heads knew they had to be cautious and confident.

They had great speed again to sail back through the fleet to a respectable 23rd with the Netherlands combo safely in check-mate behind them. They were greeted at the finish line with cheers and applause. And sailed in with grins from ear to ear.

Back on land. Mr Kent Russel looked like he needed 3 stents and a stiff rum.

But both Dad's were the first to greet the young champions with cheers, high 5s and many cheers and applause. Other competitors congratulated them and the girls quickly began to work on their trading of sailing gear. The goal is to swap with the other sailors and have a cool looking kit back in NZ

The circus of packing 2 excited girls suitcases without the logistics and event managers (mums) was a sight that nearly sent Wade (coach) into early retirement.

We are now heading home! With 1 trophy and a set of 2 medals for winning the world championship and also another set of medals for finishing in the top 10 overall.

This has been a fantastic experience for us all and I would like to thank our fantastic coach Wade Tresadern for taking these girls under his wing and giving so much of his time and experience. Also a huge shout out to all the friends and family support it’s been absolutely amazing. Thank you all again for your kind donations that has contributed hugely to this amazing achievement.

    Hi Team

    Day 4 update:

Another great day on the water here in Weymouth with wind from 6-12 Knots. Race 1 The girls got a good start and made the top mark in 5th position the breeze got a bit funky on the down wind and they pulled back a few places to finish R1 in 8th. R2 Won the start sailed the first beat perfectly rounded the top mark in first position with the rest of the fleet breathing heavily down there necks the girls finished well in 5th place. R3 sudden change of conditions breeze picked up, had a good start but couldn’t quite hold the lane they wanted finished with a very respectable 15th. All this leaves Kate and Madi in a good position going into day 5 and the final day of racing the girls are currently sitting in 9th overall. Conditions look light today variable 5knots.

Hi all, We had a late start today with our first race in Gold fleet not starting until 3pm but still managed to get three races in. The girls had a good day in this top fleet securing a 11th place in race one, A average start on race two resulted in a 41st this shows how quickly the fleet will swallow you up if your stuck in bad air. Race three the girls bounced back finishing 14th and going into day 4 in 15th place overall. Todays conditions looks like we are in for a 10knt westerly girls are pumped up and ready for action.

    Hi All

Kate and Madi have had a great 2nd regatta day on the water as the action really starts to heat up here in Weymouth. Conditions built throughout the day starting with a 15 knot SW that quickly built to +20knots giving great sailing conditions. We finished race one with a 13th as they settled in and then turned out two 4th places. This leaves them in 14th place overall and in the Gold fleet for the first day of finals starting today. We are super proud of these two young ladies competing hard and mixing it up with the best Feva sailors around. Goal one achieved make the gold fleet👍

    Hi All,

What a great start to the first day of sailing at the RS Feva worlds for our sailors Kate and Madi securing a second place in race one. Backed up by two top twenty places in R2 and R3 gives them 21st place overall currently out of 185 boats. Keep up to date on the RS Feva face book page with live feed, Sail world, NZ RS Feva, and of course I will also keep you posted. Bombard the comments page on the RS worlds Facebook with GO Kiwis! Conditions for today looks like we have a fresh SW 20+ knots so heaps of hiking is required. Our team is having lots of fun on and off the water with heaps of activities to keep us busy.

Hi all, The girls have just finished their last day of training preparation for the world championships here in Waymouth. Today is a rest day and the girls are off to the beach with the other two NZ teams. The setup here in Weymouth is amazing being the venue for 2012 olympics it’s got everything we need and a bit more. Check this out after sailing a game of ping pong with the Netherlands girls, Note the flash pink carpet. Meantime the Dads Geoff and Kent hit the water in the RS21 British nationals keel boat regatta just to make sure we keep the Brits honest. Day 1 we finished up with two 2nd places from two races. Day two today while the girls are at the beach relaxing we will have another crack.
