Raising money to repair the toilet facilities for the YMCA Kibera in the Kibera slum, Nairobi.
International
Kibera YMCA is part of the international network of the YMCA; a voluntary, not for profit membership movement serving the youth and the community.
It was founded in 1983 in the Kibera slum, an informal settlement in Nairobi with a population of close to 1 million people. The center has a very well respected pre-school and primary school with 500 students, and provides vocation training and community outreach programs which involve 1000's of young people every year.
On Sunday the 15th of November their toilet block sunk on it’s foundations and collapsed into the refuse pit below it. The block is now unusable. The block is designed to house 10 bathroom stalls, 5 for girls and 5 for boys and is an essential facility for the 500 students of the Kibera YMCA school and people attending vocational training sessions
The toilet block is structurally still in good condition and most of it can be re-used. To ensure this never happens again, the YMCA would like to upgrade the toilet from a passive refuse pit into a flushing system with a septic tank. This will allow the block to sit on solid foundations and also provide a much cleaner facility.
The YMCA is a very well run organization. The school provides a high standard of education and their vocational and community outreach programs are well known in the Kibera community. The YMCA is funded entirely by charitable donations and although they are able to run great programs, they have very little in reserve for incidents like this.
They need your help to raise funds
Because we can re-use most of the existing structure the cost isn’t that much. The contractors have quoted around $3000 USD. This will cover the new foundations, touch up repairs to the existing building, and the plumbing connection to the neigbour's septic tank.
By donating money for the new toilet block you will not only be helping to support the 500 students of the Kibera YMCA school, but also the 1000s of young people who participate in the vocational training and community outreach programs run by the YMCA. The small amount of money needed for the toilet will have a big impact on the lives of 1000’s in Kibera
Thanks for your support! Asanti Sana! (Thank you very much in Swahili)
Kenneth Owade, the program co-ordinator is a good friend of mine and I was with him when we discovered the collapsed toilet block.
I have seen first hand the positive and widespread impact the YMCA has on the Kibera community. Without a decent toilet facility, the YMCA can't run it's school or it's vocational programs.
It's a small amount of money to repair the buildings so thought I would give it a crack to raise the money and help them out!
