Our brave Shane Simpkins passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends.

We said farewell to the most incredible man at Taitua Arboretum... a setting fit for Shane, nestled amongst the trees and encompassed with a stone circle.

Shane fought long and hard - sharing such fierce determination which never waded even in his final days.

Forever in our hearts, remembered always

    We love you babe xx

  • Brian surgery numero 3 - UPDATE

BRAIN SURGERY- Today is the day!! we got a call yesterday afternoon that they can operate on Shane today!

Yesterday afternoon/evening was frantic trying to organise everything and it has been an early start in the Simpkins Whare with Maia being up all night with croup (no sleep for this mumma bear) and waking at 5am.

The early start did however give me time to make Shane pancakes with bacon and banana before he had to go nil my mouth at 6am.

Were due at the hospital at 10am this morning for his pre-op, please keep him in your thoughts today as he tackles his 3rd brain surgery.

    .....

    UPDATE

Shane is in ICU, he was moved from post op about midnight. I have just spoken to his nurse who has said that she is pleased with how is doing!

He is very tired and having regular pain relief and still having 30 minute observations, initially he had loss of strength down his right side of his body but the nurse reports that this is now almost equal!

Shane is still having difficulty with words but is able to let them know that he is HUNGRY - he has eaten TWO meals through the night smile emoticon

We will keep you posted on his progress - keep those positive healing thoughts coming...Shane is AMAZING and so are YOU!

  • HOPE ~ LOVE ~ GRATITUDE

Tonight as I sit here writing an update for all our supports I have a lump in my throat as I hold back tears...not tears of sadness...but tears of hope, love and gratitude.

Life is hectic right now and I relish any chance to sit and read through all your recent words of support that you have beautifully penned to us on both our givealittle page and our facebook page - they are what get us through this crazy journey to kick cancers butt!

Shane had his 4th round of chemotherapy this week and has a scan next week to see what is happening in that beauty brain of his...which means that he is not only coping with the side effects of chemo but also scanxiety..the latter which I join in with - not knowing is so hard and waiting to find out is even harder.

We remain positive, remind ourselves that Shane is here, living, breathing, surrounded by his family and amazing friends and supporters - we are grateful every day.

Thank you beautiful people, Arohanui x

Over the last few months we have been overwhelmed by the generous support from you all - because of you Shanes treatments are a reality... the words thank you just do not cut it for how much thanks we really have for you all!

Our running total is $19,500 - flippin AMAZING!! Were almost half way there, and you are all making this happen.

Shane had his first treatment 2 weeks ago, and is scheduled to go in for his next one in one more week. 21 day cycles of chemotherapy with the goal of shrinking this tumour down to a size that the surgeons can then go in a remove it ...

Shane found the first week post treatment hard with side effects and complete "chemo fog" (cue vacant Shane) but he is feeling well and ready to take on this next round with strength and determination. What a legend!

Lets keep the positivity flowing - LOVE and POSITIVITY is POWERFUL

    Arohanui to you all xxx

  • $40 000 to raise, we can do this!

      18 March 2015

Hello beautiful supporters - Shane as we speak is having the Avastin drug infused via IV which will be followed by Irinotecan....we will be spending the next 4 or so hours up at oncology while this happens.

We thought we would give you all a quick update on the fundraising for the Avastin drug that we are needing to fund ourselves.

This givealittle page was set up soon after Shane was first diagnosed, with roughly $30 000 dollars raised last year (AMAZING!) which Shane has used to help pay for his complementary therapies such as:

    * visits to a private oncologist for a second opinion

    * the advice of homeopaths and then the use of there remedies

    * treatment from an osteopath

    * purchasing supplements recommended up his wider medical team (most of which have been sourced from the USA to keep costs down)

    * eating a diet of whole organic foods which we have been purchasing as local as possible

    * attending a cancer retreat in Australia and New Zealand

Without your support through this page, all of the above would not have been possible - and for that we are so very grateful!

Moving forward, that leaves approx. $40 000 to raise to complete the treatment regime of Avastin. The last week we have been overwhelmed with the love and support we have received, with lots of new likers and our Facebook page and many donations totalling close to $10 000. YOU ARE ALL AMAZING!

Please keep on sharing this page and getting the word out there, every little bit does help.

Arohanui from us to you xxx

  • onwards and upwards - time to bring out the big guns and kick this cancer!

Last nights appointment with the surgeon for a discussion about their MDT team early in the day was crap to say the least! He went through Shanes last MRI and discussed the nature of the tumour.

It is not a pretty tumour, instead ugly and diffuse and much deeper into Shanes brain than his previous two. GBM cancer is not fair! How is this happening to us? To the most amazing man that I know? We are both still in shock from the appointment, and are working though our intense emotions that we are feeling right now.

Trying to see the positive side, it is a real positive that Shane is being offered treatment even though we have to fund the second drug...but with this treatment our goal is to shrink this tumour down to a point where it either stabilises or becomes nice and condensed so that the surgical team can remove it. Shane is calling the oncologist today to confirm treatment so lets get these funds raised!

This next chapter of our journey to kick cancer is going to be tough, but I know that we can do - we have fight, we have spirit, we have love, and we have our family, friends and supporters.

  • Just another bump in the road....

      25 February 2015
    Main image

We have had a follow up appointment with Shanes private oncologist who has discussed "another area of concern" on his last scan, a highlighted area right beside where the tumour that was removed was sitting - this was not the news we were wanting but we have been given treatment options so that is awesome!

Yesterday Shane picked up the treatment quote from the private hospital, $70,000 all up for 10 cycles of chemotherapy using two different types of chemo together. We are now waiting to hear back from our insurance company to see if they will cover this completely/partially.

Shane has his follow up appointment post latest scan at Waikato next week to discuss which treatment options they can offer him.... we have been told previously that because of the public health system funding we may be limited this time round for what can be offered, but we are remaining optimistic that we will have plenty of options for Shane to mull over and then make an informed decision on which way he wants to go.

Naturally, we are super bummed that Shane requires more treatment but its just another bump in the road to his recovery and beating this cancer!

Thank you all for the positivity and love you share, we love you all

    Arohanui, The Simpkins Whanau xx

To all our beautiful family, friends and supporters,

Shane has had another successful brain surgery to remove a tumour that had grown to a similar size as his initial one, in the same location. He is currently recovering in hospital and doing remarkably well. He has lost his peripheral vision in his right eye, doctors are not certain if this will return at this stage.

This Christmas will be spent surrounded by family and friends, allowing Shane the time and comfort to recover from this last surgery.

Looking forward, Shane is as motivated as ever to kick cancers butt. He has continued with daily mediation while in hospital as well as drinking the slow pressed juices that were preparing at home. Treatment wise, we and unsure of options at this point of time but will be discussing this further once Shane is our of hospital.

Thank you all for your love and support, we love you all and with you all love and happiness for 2015.

Arohanui from our family to yours xx

  • Update for 13/10/2014

      13 October 2014

So here we are facing another challenge ~ but with all your love and support we are trying to remain positive. Last week saw Shane back up in hospital for his monthly drug trial injections, then a follow up MRI. The MRI has shown up some new growth that we don't like the look of, so we are now awaiting news of when Shane will be going in for another craniotomy. Scary as surgery but we have faith that he is going to rock it just like last time. We are now exploring options for treatment post surgery as chemo/radiation are not an option within the public health system..... thanks to this awesome page and all of your support we are able to do this~Shane has been in contact with one of the Doctors doing research on Vitamin C infusions so we are going to explore this more. Sophia is excited about delivering Shane pressed juices and whole food while he is hospital...sometimes the innocent view of the world of wee kiddies is just the refreshing words you need in trying times. Keep the positive energy flowing beautiful friends - all our love, the Simpkins Whanau xx

      20 July 2014

Wow! the ice challenge that is making its way around the world is bringing awesome awareness of Cancer ~ we are so grateful to everyone who has completed the challenge to not only spread the word on how shitty cancer can be, but also show that there is an awesome community of people out there to love and support everyone that is faced with the challenge of kicking cancers butt! We have been lucky enough to have spent the past weekend down in Taupo staying with our beautiful friend family who welcomed us into their, entertained us with awesome tales and filled our bellys. Shane took his juicer down and demonstrated some of the goodness that he makes...shots of green juice (kale, wheat grass, parsley, mesculin salad and apple) and carrot and ginger all round which went down a treat! Tomorrow Shane has his MRI, so keep us in your thoughts and send us lots of positive vibes ... knowing that we have this awesome support out there helps alleviate some of the scanxiety that creeps in each time. Tuesday this week Shane will begin another round of Chemo for 5 days.. with a plan of smashing it with little to no side effects! We are also looking forward to an awesome 4 course fundraising dinner that a legendary friend of ours is organising, cant wait to be able to catch up with everyone in one place over great food.... Each day we are thankful to you all, not only for your support that you have shown to this page, but also for all the love and positivity that you share with us...thank you thank you thank you beautiful people xx

      7 July 2014

Kiora beautiful supporters - its been a while since the page was updated due to the arrival of our gorgeous wee girl on Maia who arrived on Easter Friday. Life as a family of four is very different and it has definitely taken a while for us all to adjust to the new family dynamic. Sophia is an awesome big sister who has been such a big help so far. Her extra set of hands have been much needed when Shane has been on chemo and running low on energy. Since Maias arrival Shane has had another 2 rounds of chemo, one of which knocked him around a fair bit but in his usual fighting style he managed to bounce back and continue through to the next round. Last round Shanes white blood count went extremely low which was a bit of a shock to us all, but within a week his count was back up to where it needed to be to begin another lot of chemo... his body is working hard healing itself whilst being pumped with toxic drugs - and we believe this is being hugely supported by the diet/lifestyle changes that we have adopted. We have had another visit with the private oncologist who has suggested that Shane begins vitamin B12 injections monthly along with continuing with his supplements. Were onto 2 monthly scans which each time bring on what we call ""scanxiety"" but continue to remain positive and actively living life. Thanks again for all of your love and support - without you all this journey would be so much harder...love to you all x

  • Update for 29/04/2014

      29 April 2014

Shane is back in New Zealand after spending time at the Gawler foundation based in the Yarra Valley, Australia. His time there enabled him to gain new knowledge on how to incorporate integrated care into his medical care that he is already receiving to provide him with a rounded holistic approach to his journey with cancer. He faced the challenge of being on chemo in an unknown environment with strength and determination and made it through with the wonderful support of all the team at the foundation along with the other participants that he met there. He returned home a new person, with hair growth and a beaming smile - for that i am so very grateful to you all as you made his time there possible! Easter was extra special this year as our second daughter arrived on Easter Friday, a happy and content Maia is a very welcome addition to our family..the last week has been very special for us spending time together as a family of four and getting acquainted with the newest member. Shane has started on his chemo again today, unfortunately it has hit him hard with loss of appetite, tiredness and nausea. He has been juicing most days and will continue to do so with the help of this page allowing us to purchase the organic food needed to support Shane in his treatment path that he has chosen. Thank you again for all your love and support ~ we cannot express just how much you all mean to us, without your continued support our journey would be so much harder. All our love, Sam, Shane, Sophia and wee Maia xx
