Working on the ground with local ni-Vanuatu communities in Port Vila to rebuild stronger homes devastated by Cyclone Kevin.

International

Kia ora! We arrived 7 weeks ago and have experienced 3 cyclones, each one more ramped up than the last. Welcome to Vanuatu!

My wife Nik is teaching at a local school and I’ve been waiting to see what my next move is work-wise. Right now, in front of us, is a huge opportunity to use my building skills (over 20 yrs experience) and Kiwi ingenuity, alongside my passion and empathy for people, to get stuff done!

We’re here in a time of desperate need and we want to pitch in with rebuilding after Cyclone Judy and Kevin. My plan is to get a team of locals together and to build STRONGER.

So to do this, we need materials and a funding stream. Good, cyclone resistant fixings here costs a bomb and are outside locals reach. Old roofing nails in tin don’t last the distance. We can help make that story a little different for some families. What a privilege - we’re obviously here for a reason.

So if this is something you are into supporting, it’d be great to hear from you. Every little bit counts. I’ll get a fb page active of this actually gains momentum to show the kinds of work we are getting done.

Greg Laing's involvement (page creator)

We’ve brought youth teams from NZ to Efate over the past 11 years, building water tanks in villages. We have long term connections with the Pango and Eratap community and now live in Erakor, so the needs around us are obvious. Our neighbours need help.

Use of funds

Hardware to rebuild and strengthen homes - fasteners, ply, concrete, timber, roofing connectors, cyclone connections, solar lighting and charging docks.

Wholesale food supplies - there is an immediate need for food as local gardens have been decimated.

Good news! The first 2 floor slabs are down!   3 June 2023

Since the TC’s, Greg has been busy!

💥 He’s met with local Chiefs to see who needs what the most in their villages

💥 He’s worked with friends in NZ to get a container full of freebies headed here in June

💥 He’s been in the tools with locals and laid 2 floor slabs for families whose homes were flattened in the cyclones

The work is underway for Build Stronger Vanuatu to build/repair 100 homes. It’s happening! But we need continued support. As these projects take shape, we seek ongoing funding for materials, wages for locals, gas and expenses incurred. Are you keen to support this mahi and watch the journey unfold?
