Kiwi's are weird, our perspective is unique and this web series will show you some of how we got that way!
Auckland
All over the globe, the unique way Kiwi’s see the world is being noticed. Our comedy is dry, sarcastic and verging on dark, our most well known politicians get known for doing things politicians don’t do in other parts of the world and our film makers tell stories that send over seas audiences into states of confusion and fits of laughter – but is it any wonder we’re such a weird bunch when we’re actually a country founded, in part, by a man in a night gown with a silly hat?
Aotearoa, New Zealand is full of weird little quirks in our history like this and we want your help in telling some of these stories. Our first 5 Episode season will explore some strange moments in Kiwi History, and entertain you with new knowledge you didn’t know you wanted! In easy to digest 10 minute episodes, we’ll explore some strange moments that have shaped the country.
Episode 1: Wee Willie Hobson in his Night Gown
We all think of the Signing of the Treaty of Waitangi very differently to how it actually happened.
Episode 2: The Town that sold Lingerie online
Internet Banking would have made its way here eventually but it was a town selling its name to a lingerie company that made it happen faster.
Episode 3: Fake News in the Real World
A 1995 Mockumentary watched by half a million kiwis fooled the nation, but what were the long term side effects on how Kiwis viewed the news?
Episode 4: How a Horse won an Olympic Swimming Medal
New Zealand’s first Olympic medal in swimming came from a young Dunedin swimmer with no coach – but some creative ideas inspired by Horse racing.
Episode 5: How the Mystery of Mystery Creek created more Mysteries.
Hamilton’s Mystery Creek is a popular venue for large scale events but the mystery behind the name is more mysterious than the name itself!
We want to talk to experts, those involved and a couple of recreations as well to help make sure we not only get the full story but also create something educational and fun at the same time. So why not help us out, and help us tell some Kiwi as history!
We've estimated a budget of $3000 an episode, to cover production costs. These include a small crew, food and transport costs. If we get more, then it would be split evenly between each episode but if we get less, we'll work on each episode as we can.
