INTRODUCTION -

Music can be an expression, a creative outlet and spontaneous. Music can cause release and tension and can bring a mass of people together in one place. Music can be fictional and non - fictional and create space. Music is colourful and vibrant but can also be distasteful if its not your cuppa tea.

Music can cause broken hearts and can be the gateway into your soul. Music can be created by a non associated environment, but then again, can also be created from a natural environment that can create a music anomaly. It is the whisper in ours ears and the lust to our eyes and the creative way for us to release our inner dancing machine. Music is, was and will forever be, how ever we may interpret music is ours and ours alone to do so.

Music has enabled me to create and express the trials and triumphs within my life thus far. Music has also allowed me to connect with people and express in an honest and open way within my lyrical content and has led to the healing process through love, kindness and acceptance. This leads me into the production of KUPE: NAVIGATION.

KUPE: NAVIGATION is apart of an assessment for my final year of a Bachelor of Musical Arts studied with MAINZ, Southern Institute of Technology.

Below is the purpose and outline for this give a little page. Ngā mihi nui Koutou.

PURPOSE -

1.) Record Audio.

2.) Live Performance.

3.) Theme.

1.) RECORDED WORK -

Consists of audio content, visual content or a mixture of the two, in a recorded format. I have decided to produce a 4 track bilingual E.P, which will consist of both Te Reo Māori and English lyrical content, amalgamated with Taonga puoro (traditional Māori Instruments), and a String Quartet. This will leave the Acoustic Guitar and lead Vocals to be at the forefront of the E.P.

2.) LIVE PERFORMANCE -

Consists of performing musical content which can be original or otherwise, for the duration of no less than 40 minutes. I have decided to showcase my 4 track bilingual E.P. Along with an additional 10 tracks of original compositions in both lyrical and instrumental form, accompanied by Taonga puoro (traditional Māori Instruments), String Quartet, Drums, Bass Guitar and myself on Acoustic Guitar and Lead Vocals.

3.) THEME -

E.P. & Live Performance:

As a lyrical writer, composer, producer and an all round creative, context and themes play a huge part in the way I create and direct. This allows me to express the purpose of what I produce.

The theme for the Recorded Work and Live Performance Project is in the context of the portrayal of my life this far and the navigation of childhood, adolescence onto adulthood. The songs written and composed reflects the traumas and experiences and how this had left me with low self esteem, lack of confidence, lack of belonging and the lack of direction, along with other insecurities.

This E.P. And Live Performance project also tells the story of how these insecurities led to depression and anxiety and the dark places I lived in, within my mind, along with the continual process toward healing. This E.P. And Live Performance also reflects the triumphs and personal successes through love, kindness and friendship continues to heal me.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION -

NOTE* the below information is not in conjunction with KEY TO LIFE, but this is a personal choice of mine inspired by a friend. This will allow the FULL AMOUNT of the purchases of the E.P. to go directly into the charitable trusts account.

ALL sales made from the E.P. will be donated to http://www.keytolife.org.nz/ who are a Charitable Trust (originally created as The Nutters Club Charitable Trust in 2010 and since renamed) is a community peer support group, aiming to forever change the way New Zealanders think, act and feel about mental health and suicide. By working seamlessly with mental health professionals, service providers, astute business leaders, and our communities we believe it is possible to reverse the population trends of depression and suicide by effecting a positive social change.

THEIR MISSION -

The Key to Life Charitable Trust is committed to our long term goal of a zero suicide rate in New Zealand. While many will say this is not achievable, we acknowledge the magnitude of this task and believe in the benefits of an outstanding goal rather than a continued satisfaction with mediocrity. We believe zero suicide can be achieved through the provision of life-saving and life-affirming resources and services based on the success of The Nutters Club. We will conduct nationwide digital communities, regular meetings/clinics, advocacy and educational programs with the aim to create safe and supportive environments which foster positivity for all those involved whether they are service providers or receiving help through our programs. Our short-term goal is to achieve a significant downward trend in the suicide statistics starting immediately.

THEIR VISION -

A New Zealand where the rising prevalence of suicide is curbed and to create an open dialogue surrounding suicide and mental health awareness to diminish stigmas through a societal attitudinal change which affects perceptions of these issues.

THEIR GUIDING PRINCIPLES -

The work of the Key to Life Charitable Trust is undertaken with respect, dignity and acceptance for all those seeking guidance, advice and support from the organisation. We respect the wishes of all who interact with, and this will extend to confidentiality of circumstances, the privacy of information shared and other reasonable requests made by these individuals.

The Key to Life Charitable Trust maintains respect for Te Titriti o Waitangi, The Privacy Act of 1993 (New Zealand Privacy Commission), the New Zealand Human Rights Commission and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
