Lake Ōhau giving to Hawke's Bay recovery

  • Thank you for the donations totalling $7004.00

      9 May 2023

Having sympathised with so many Hawkes Bay people as a result of our own fire experiences, we decided to offer a bit of material support and raise some money. In fact, in 6 weeks, thanks to your generosity, we raised over $7000.00 – 40% beyond our target which is mind blowing! So well done the people of the Lake Ōhau Community and our supporters.

We helped two groups – the small Hawkes Bay community of Puketapu and a group of Otago farmers helping to rebuild destroyed farm fences and water supply.

When we informed each of these groups that they would receive $3500.00 each, they both responded with huge gratitude.

From the Puketapu Community: “Thank you so much for your email, that is just so incredible ! The support is greatly appreciated and from one small community to another we thank you so much. We are working so hard to try and fundraise and every little bit helps so much."

From the Otago Fencers: “What an amazing community! Thank you on behalf of the farmers for organising this with your team and to all the donors. The money raised not only offers practical help but is a reminder that those in the South are thinking of those impacted and this goes a long way. With heartfelt thanks."

So on behalf of Tony Ryan, Michelle Paterson and Viv Smith-Campbell, thank you so much everybody. This has been a great exercise and we are thrilled with the outcome.

Just as it was after the fire, knowing there are people outside your community who genuinely care is massive for mental resilience and spirit.

  • 8 days to go - let's get to at least $6000.00

Since our Givealittle page opened on 25 March 2023 - 30 donors have given $5840.00 - this is fantastic and so much appreciated. Update - tonight we have got to $6040.00 (net of fees this is $5738.00 - $302 in fees to be covered by top-up donations!)

Now there are just 8 days to go - help us get to at least $6000.00 so each groups receives $3000.00 or more each - donate today please

The fencing group have 10 teams of fences travelling to Hawke's Bay to do repairs to fences - so far 10km of fences have been repaired or replaced. The work we are supporting with these donations is making a big impact and the families are extremely grateful for this.

The Puketapu community is now reconnected with a bridge over the Tutaekuri River in place. Removal of silt, finding belongings that went downstream with the flooding and sorting out housing are keeping everyone busy. It is a very long road to recovery in front of them.

We know how daunting this can all be...overwhelming at times! As the pop up pub that recently visited Puketapu can do, we can generate a feeling of support and empathy for the them.

Please support a big hug from our community to theirs - every little bit helps.

    Tony Ryan and Michelle Paterson

  • WOW - thank you for all your support so far...

      2 April 2023

We have raised more than the initial $5000.00 goal in only 8 days - fantastic!

We wont stop at $5000.00 - let's see how much more we can raise for the Puketapu community and rural folk who are suffering the devastation and trauma from Cyclone Gabrielle.

Yesterday we received this message from a member of the Puketapu community -

Thank you so so much! This means so much to our community!

We know about how hard the days and weeks after the "event" are from our experience of the wildfire at Lake Ōhau, and how much it means to know people are sending aroha to you by supporting this fundraising.

    ngā mihi nui

    Tony and Shell
