Let's get Lauren out and about!

    Hello,

Today marks the one year anniversary of Lauren's passing. I want to share with you the generosity and care that one little girl created in our community.

Around June/July 2023, these companies: Rutherford & Bond Toyota and King Toyota, Dzine Signs, Urban Edge Planning, and some very generous people donated their time and collaborated together to make the Conductive Education van happen.

Thanks to your help, kids like Lauren will be able to get out and about to activities around Wellington.

The sign writing was a beautiful touch to remember Lauren, and we remember her every time we see a rainbow or butterfly.

That is such a beautiful van. I'm sure it'll bring a lot of joy for the kids.

    Kia ora whānau,

    This is Rachel, Lauren's mum.

First, a huge heart-felt thank you for all your generosity to fund a vehicle for Lauren through this page. We were blown away by the response.

Sadly, Lauren passed away on the 20th of October, at three years and seven months old. Although her health had not been great for several weeks, we had been at home and were mostly managing, so the decline was sudden in the end. She was surrounded by love with myself, my husband Raymond, my mum, and our lovely Alfie all holding her.

We celebrated Lauren's life last week and are now trying to work out what life will look like.

We have decided that the money donated for Lauren's vehicle, would best be donated to Conductive Education, who also need a van and have recently set up their own Give a Little for that specific purpose: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/conductive-education-lower-hutt-needs-a-new-van

In this way, rather than only benefitting one special needs family, the money supports multiple special needs kids. Lauren used to regularly take the Conductive van to hydrotherapy (before the van broke down!), one of her favourite places in the world. The van would also be used to take children to Riding for the Disabled and other outings.

We sincerely hope that this doesn't upset anyone who wished to donate to Lauren more directly. In honesty, we could not think of a better group to benefit from this.

If anything, the past few months underscore how important it is to enjoy and use the time you have. It's really hard to feel grateful every minute of every day, but sometimes just a little reflection on the small joys can make a big difference.

    With love and immense gratitude,

Rachel Malcolm-Swindells - on behalf of Lauren, my husband Raymond, my son Fraser, and Lauren's BFF Alfie

Alfie here again - I made a video celebrating Lauren, which I have linked on this update, which you are welcome to watch. It was made with the good and happy times, which we had many.

Conductive Education Trust (http://www.cewellington.org.nz/) is a registered charity which means that all donations will go towards the goal of getting their van.

Thanks again for your support in this incredibly difficult time,

    Much love,

    Alfie

I want to personally thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. Children like Lauren don't automatically get funding for everything she needs, as her disabilities were not caused by an accident.

Once the funding has been released and her parents choose a suitable vehicle, you folks will be the first to know!

Thanks again for helping Lauren get on the move x

I have decided to leave the amount open, and to hope for the best. Our dream vehicle would be something more eco friendly; as looking after Lauren does create quite the footprint.
We are so incredibly grateful towards all of our supporters so far. Cheers!

    Oh. My. Goodness!

Thank you all so much for your help this far. We really appreciate every single person who has visited, shared, read and donated to Lauren’s page.

We are so so lucky to be in a community of truly wonderful, altruistic people.

Our initial idea was to buy a secondhand diesel or petrol van. However, we’ve nearly hit our target and it’s been less than a week!

I have decided to leave the amount open, and to hope for the best. Our dream vehicle would be something more eco friendly; as looking after Lauren does create quite the footprint.
We are so incredibly grateful for the help we have received so far.

Here’s a message from Lauren's parents, Rachel and Raymond:

“We are incredibly surprised and humbled by the generosity of our community. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated and shared the page. Having a slightly higher target might allow us to get a slightly newer vehicle which hopefully may mean more longevity. Please enjoy this pic of Lauren who is home and being positively delightful.”
