Let's make weed legal

It is a cruelty to make a medicine a crime and a cruelty to punish people for seeking a pleasure that does others no harm. Enough is enough.

Nationwide

The Government has pledged to hold a referendum on the legal status of Marijuana for recreational use by 2020 but with no timeline for making Marijuana legal after that.

Some experts estimate it could be six years before we finally have a sensible and just Marijuana management regime in NZ. This is unacceptable.

Over the last 50 years this senseless, wasteful and cruel prohibition has ruined the lives of 10's of thousands of our fellow New Zealander's, squandered billions of dollars and served only to build a large organised and vicious criminal underclass.

This law, enacted because marijuana use has been considered to be a moral issue, has done nothing but cause harm and foster immorality. It is a bad law, it is an immoral one and the longer we take to end it will serve no public good; it will only ruin more lives and foster even greater criminality.

We can do better than this.

The NZ Drug Foundation already has a pathway to drug reform and a model law that can and should form the basis of our approach to making marijuana use legal.

In short, much of the work we need to do has already been done; if we decide to we can easily create a viable regime that makes marijuana legal on 1st January 2020.

This petition is the next step on that path, please give it your support.

Use of funds

Funds will be spent on printing, advertising, promotion, travel and accommodation expenses for the petition and for similar costs to promote a "yes" campaign during the referendum.
