4 months and still in NICU
28 March 2016The back wall of Leo's trachea (where they separated it from the oesophagus) is soft and floppy. When he tries to breathe, the wall collapses in on itself, which is why he was having to work so hard once off the ventilator. He is now on cpap, a continuous positive air pressure machine, which is attached to his face/nose 24/7 to hold the trachea open while he breathes. There is no quick solution, we need to give the trachea time to strengthen itself with the help of cpap. Therefore we are facing weeks, but more likely months in NICU here in Hamilton.
