I've been given one of ten places on a masters programme, and am looking for funds to help cover international tuition fees and expenses.
International
Hello friends, family and supporters,
Good news!
I've been given one of ten places on a master's programme (The Art of Africa, Oceania and the Americas) at the University of East Anglia in the UK;
The University has awarded me a scholarship;
UEA’s Art History department is one of the leading centres in the world for the study of art and material culture;
In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), UEA was ranked third in the UK for the quality of its research impact in Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory (Times Higher REF 2014 Analysis). Out of about 130 universities, that isn’t bad I reckon.
The decision has been made to charge me international fees, however, which makes finding the funds a tad on the challenging side. I’ve contested this decision, but to no avail. The course is full time for one year, and intake is in late September 2019. Needless to say, I’m going hell-for-leather to get the funds together. In spite of the odds, I think it’s worth giving it a nudge. Your help would be much appreciated!
About The Programme:
The course covers historical and contemporary art of Africa, Oceania and the Americas;
It is cross-disciplinary, with an emphasis on museology, art history, archeology and anthropology;
We will be expected to engage with issues involved in the display of art and artefacts, both in their original contexts and in museums and exhibitions (think repatriation and cultural appropriation);
There will be a focus on conservation, and the process for assembling and organising exhibitions and collections;
Curation and conceptualising exhibitions and collections will be central to the programme;
Substantial research will result in a dissertation concerning a particular area of interest.
Why I'm Taking The Course:
This master’s programme would serve to consolidate and formalise aspects of my work and allow for continued research into various lines of inquiry, particularly how the arts are used as a means of determining and displaying identity in various cultures, both in the contemporary and historically;
As a trained actor, I’m interested in how people relate to each other, and how behaviour is determined by social and cultural surrounds. I have a background in art theory, art history, music and languages and as an aesthete and maker, art and design is of great importance to me. I’ve worked in fashion, visual arts, architectural and urban design contexts. I've also worked in community development and employment relations. The cross-disciplinary nature of this course is what makes it relevant to my own work as a generalist in the arts and humanities;
Social mindsets and collective philosophies can perpetuate things that need to be resolved in our communities, such as poverty and mental health crises. It’s the job of arts and humanities to reflect on, and find solutions to these problems. This programme would further equip me to provide evidence based arguments for the purpose and necessity of the arts in the broader context of cultural and social development;
I’ve always been interested in how cultures meet and merge, and being from a multicultural background, this programme is of particular pertinence to me personally. Being both British and tangata whenua (among other ancestral ties), has always been an interesting path to walk. Taking part in this programme will provide opportunity for me to facilitate cultural exchange in the future, and to learn more about my own heritage.
The Nuts and Bolts -
The deposit is £2000 ($4000 NZD) and is due in late July of this year.
Living expenses for the first month and a bit, including relocating to and establishing in Norwich, are estimated at £3000 ($6000 NZD).
I'd be very happy if I could come up with £5000 ($10,000 NZD) via Givealittle. Anything over and above this would be gratefully received, and would go towards the remainder of the tuition fees and living expenses;
The full amount of tuition fees is £16,000 (international fees). The scholarship I've been awarded is for £4,000, which leaves £12,000 to find. In addition, living expenses are estimated by the University at £1000 per month;
Thankfully, I don't have to pay all of the fees at once, and can make arrangements to pay in blocks throughout the year. I'm going to apply to other funders for the rest. I just need your help to get over the first hurdle.

The funds raised through Givealittle will cover the £2000 deposit, relocation, establishment and initial course related costs (estimated at £3000). Any further funds raised through Givealittle will contribute to further living expenses and tuition fees.
Trial, Tribulation and Triumph 3 September 2019
Hello xx I start at UEA in late September. I'm still in London and applying madly for funding, and dealing with the logistics of getting up to Norwich. There have been a number of challenges along the way, not the least of which is coming up with the international tuition fees, which are set at £16,000. With the scholarship of £4000, and the deposit of £2000 (paid with the help of lovely givealittle donors!), I now have £10,000 to go. I've decided to extend the life of this page, so please share the link with anyone you know that's a keen arts supporter. The picture I've added to the update is that of a print of the artist Annie Albers (of Bauhaus fame, and no, not the band). Her work was heavily influenced by pre-Columbian design in South America.
Stephanie! Thank you so much for your support. Lots of love xxx
Thanks Andrew! What a gem! X
