Maia needs surgery to stop the seizures that could oneday kill her, but the surgery has a huge down side to please help with her dream
Canterbury
Maia was born on the 9th of June 2005. was born a happy healthy baby weighing 7lb 8oz. At 16 months old Maia suffered a subdural heamatoma to the left side of her brain. At the time of the accident we were informed that Maia wouldnt survive or have a quality of life. So the decision was made to turn of life support, But Maia is a fighter and after turning off the life support she decided that she would start breathing and fight the good fight. Doctors had told us that Maia would be Brain dead basically. She has proved everyone wrong and is the most loving, funny, unselfish amazing child you will ever meet. Her ability to make any situation the best it can be is remarkable.
Since all this happened Maia has been left with severe brain damage. This has made Maias everyday life a challenge not only her but everyone involved with Maia. She has developmental issues, Partial right side paralysis and absolutely no peripheral vision. Maia cannot be left alone she needs to be with someone at all times. Also since her brain injury Maia has suffered from constantly changing and increasing seizures. They have got worse as she has aged and after trying numerous medications are no where near under control. We have now come to point where Maias seizures are effecting her ability to live a normal life including her days at school, And the scary reality that one of these seizures could kill Maia.
After meeting with her doctor we have now been left with the major decision of surgery for Maia to stop the seizures. The ups to the surgery is obviously the seizures will stop, but the down side is they will need to disconnect half of Maias brain and this will cause Maia to loose mobility on her right side. She already suffers partial right side paralysis but not to extent that she cant walk unaided or go do things most kids can do. There are also other things this surgery will restrict but we are looking at what is best for Maia to have a quality of life.
What we want to do while she is still able to walk and do the things she can unaided is give her the opportunity to do the things we all take for granted. We would love to take Maia to disneyland or Dreamworld. Just do the things every child should enjoy and experience in life before these things become to difficult for her to do. All proceeds will be going towards Maias trip to disneyland. Which will include accomodation, Flights, entry to the theme park and also transport.
I am Maias Mother. I want my daughter to experience all the the things she can now while she is still able to enjoy them with both sides of her body able to do so.
