I want to provide 'shut-in' maids (modern day slaves) in Lebanon with an audio player containing the bible and songs in their own language.
International
One maid a week, on average, commits suicide in Lebanon. They come seeking to break the poverty cycle in their home countries but many end up as virtual slaves - no day off, constantly on-call, abused - physically, verbally and sexually - passports withheld, wages unpaid, and unable to leave. Little wonder that they jump from the balconies.
Last year, I created a Givealittle page and people donated $22,400 (NZ). This money was used to buy 1,200 audio players loaded with the bible, worship songs and devotions in the languages of Ethiopians, Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans. The joy these brought to the women was amazing. The pilot project worked :) The feedback has been that they are listening to them and extremely grateful for them - life-changing stuff! Let's do it again!!!! Each audio player costs NZ$20/US$15 including batteries, earphones, shipping, and import duties.
I'm a volunteer Christian worker who has lived in the Middle East for 20 years serving under the umbrella of the evangelical church in Beirut, Lebanon. For the last 3.5 years I've been helping migrant domestic workers in whatever way I can.
Thank you very much.
