Kiwis helping each other!
Royal Oak, Auckland
Karen is a local older lady who lives on her own and has no family to call on. Myself and some of the other community members have been assisting her in the initial aftermath. Her property has been badly affected - both from the property behind flooding into hers and also from the water in Pah Road gushing down her driveway. The water rose up about 4 feet from garden level and into the downstairs of her house (2cm above the carpet) and also into the garage. The Council have now yellow-stickered the property. Unfortunately Karen does not have insurance.
Karen does a lot of charity work in our local community, often doing voluntary work to get spare food from a large local restaurant which she then donates to families in need. She also currently has 8 rescue kittens/cats - 2 of whom she managed to save from the flood waters!
There are so many people affected by the recent flooding. I would ask that we all rally together, as Kiwis love to do, and help this lady. The carpet has been removed but the floor is now collapsing in certain parts and it is quite likely she will need new flooring throughout the downstairs and also a new deck. The fridge/freezer she had in the garage which she holds all the food to be donated is beyond repair. Unfortunately a lot of food has had to be dumped when the filthy flood water raged through.
