We are taking a court case to make sure councils' "sinking lid" policies on pokie venues are allowed to sink.
Nationwide
Many city and district councils have a "sinking lid" policy on pokie machines. Over time, the number pokie venues in those areas should be fewer.
But for the past 10 years or so the Department of Internal Affairs, which regulates pokie gambling, has made decisions that meant sinking lids didn't sink. There are more pokie venues than there should be, all over New Zealand.
We are taking a case to the Court of Appeal to stop that from happening. We had a partial victory at the High Court, but it wasn't enough: we want the Court of Appeal to hear this case and give greater certainty.
We've got great lawyers, who are working for free, but we need to pay court fees and costs of up to $25,000.
This will cover costs of filing fees, hearing fees, and surety for court costs. Any funds not needed for this case will go to paying fees and costs for similar cases. We've got a few lined up!
Make sinking lids sink! 9 March 2025
We've reduced the amount sought and extended the closing date.
Our lawyers have applied to the Court of Appeal for an extension of time, which we expect the Court will grant.
The Department of Internal Affairs had dispensed with surety for costs, which has reduced the amount we need to raise by a substantial amount.
