A former refugee is about to attend university for the first time. There are many related costs. Help make education accessible for her.

Wellington

Leila* was born in Ethiopia, and arrived in New Zealand 4 years ago as a refugee with her family. She arrived with no English, and has worked hard learning the language from scratch. And as you may know, 'kiwi' English can be quite a challenge to understand, at times!

She is about to start an intensive English course at Victoria University, before enrolling in a degree. It is a dream of hers to attend University, and the opportunity has arrived for her.

Leila has two young children, age 1 years and 2 years. For Leila to attend classes, the children will need to go to a childcare facility for half of the week. Fees for quality early childhood education can be quite high, as they are not covered for children under 3. We need at least $3000 to make this possible.

I am fundraising as much as I can to help Leila with these costs. It would be a dream come true for her to attend university, and she has worked so hard to get to this point.

I tutor a former refugee in English, and she is about to start university in New Zealand for the first time. There are many costs involved along the way, and she needs help to pay for childcare.

Use of funds

All of the funds will be going towards childcare fees.

Minimum goal reached!  21 March 2019

Where do I start - in 24 hours this page reached the minimum we need to cover the childcare fees for Leila's children for the first few months of her course.

When I told Leila this, she said, "People are doing this all for me? New Zealanders are the kindest people I've ever met."

I told her that everyone wants her to have the same opportunities for education as they did. And then we both cried a lot.

So thank you all for all your generosity, it has truly blown us away. There are still many hurdles and costs for Leila on this journey, but because of you all, she can start her course knowing that her children are happy and safe.
