Burglary and House Fire Leave Him in Need of Community Support
Kerikeri, Northland
An 80-year-old man, Arnold Kalnins, faced a series of unfortunate events after his already challenging living conditions were compounded by a burglary and a devastating fire that destroyed his home in Kaikohe.

Waking up to the sound of flames, he managed to escape with his three dogs as his house was engulfed in a blaze. Investigations revealed that the fire was caused by firewood near the fireplace.
Despite losing everything in the fire, (and having no insurance) Arnold's resilience shone through as he had previously dealt with the theft of his belongings, leaving him without hot water and power. He has found refuge in a shed and received limited assistance from neighbour's and friends. The community's support, including the possibility of a Givealittle page and donations, will provide much-needed help for Arnold to rebuild his life.
