Maple lost a leg thanks to a cruel backyard butcher style amputation - and her remaining front leg is fusing. Help us help Maple

  • Update on the gorgeous Maple

      21 March 2016

Well - wow, what an update. Thanks to the generosity of givealittle, Maple has had several vet consults, including a VSG (specialist vet consult) and xrays. This determined that Maple lost her leg within the very early days of her life beginning - and this brutal loss of leg has resulted in significant deformity in her supporting front leg - due to increased strain on a growing limb. The great news is that the specialist advised that surgery was not recommended at this time - and supported our pursuit of a custom made front wheel cart for Maple from the US, and suggested ongoing physiotherapy. Maple's cart was made to measure and built and received within a couple of weeks. A team of very special people made this happen - and leapt through all sorts of hoops to make sure that the measurements were correct, and really, quite simply - physically made the cart happen. Big thankyou to North Auckland puppy rescue for that! Her early introduction to the two wheeled cart was met with some disdain from an independent wee soul that she is... but with time and energy from her fantastic foster, Maple is beginning to see the cart as friend, not foe. So - to cut a very long story short, this page has given Maple more than words can describe. We are quite confident that she will have quality of life, and coupled with her tenacity - she will give life everything her 3 legs can. Ongoing physiotherapy treatment is indicated to help her. And it must be said, the electromagnetic treatment received from PETme (enabled by an incredibly special volunteer that played taxi and attendant for Maple) made a big difference to this girl over 5 sessions. Maple will be looking for a super special forever home, but this will be a very well managed process. She is such a special girl - she deserves a very special home. If you think you may cut the mustard, expressions of interest to Staffy Rescue NZ, or pm facebook page "Jumping Jazzi-her journey home".

Thank you so much to everyone for making Maple's magic happen!

  • Big thank you to everyone

$1530 raised for Maple, along with a very kind offer from "PET Me" to help treat her pain and discomfort associated with her physical condition (using pulsed electromagnetic treatment) and to work alongside the vet for any rehab which may help her. Will be sure to keep you all updated as this very special girl continues on her special journey.

Xrays and vet consult completed from a vet with a keen interest in orthopaedics. Her foster provided an update "her shoulder doesn't look to good (this is on the leg she still has) ther's a big gap between her bone and the socket, he said this is where all her pain is from and now seeing the xrays he said from his experience we could do surgery and put a ligament in to bring the bone and socket together, but her recovery process will be really hard and slow, as its her only front limb to walk on so isn't the same for a 4 legged dog who would use the other front leg to take the weight. He's sending the xrays and some videos he took of her walking to his Australian colleagues today and will call within the week".

Lots of homework has gone into finding a vet with expertise and interest in orthopaedic injuries for a second opinion. Maple had a consult with this vet this week, and is booked for xrays on Monday. He has indicated a keen interest in helping us to help Maple and has a good network of peers with orthopaedic speciality knowledge in Australia. In the meantime, Maple stays with her fosters that adore her, and she is doing really well.

Can't keep up with individually thanking donations - but will get there, and in the meantime, please consider this a personal acknowledgement of your contribution to help Maple. Stunned by the support received in such a short space of time.
